Match Report: Yeovil Town v Needham Market

Yeovil Town crashed out of the FA Trophy this afternoon as a simply awful performance saw the Glovers lose 8-7 on penalties to Southern League side Needham Market following a 1-1 draw in normal time. Morgan Williams but Yeovil 1-0 up just after the half hour mark but Needham Market levelled the scores just before the interval. A poor second half performance from Town meant the game went to penalties which Needham managed to edge out Yeovil 8-7 to progress.

Darren Sarll made four changes to the side that was beaten 2-1 at Southend in midweek. The injured Luke Wilkinson was replaced by Morgan Williams while Dan Moss returned to Millwall following his loan spell and Charlie Wakefield were dropped from the side and replaced by Jack Robinson and Matt Worthington. Tom Knowles took a place on the bench as Reuben Reid regained his place in the starting XI.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Morgan Williams, Josh Staunton, Max Hunt and Jack Robinson in front of Grant Smith. Dale Gorman, Matt Worthington, Jordan Barnett and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton made up the midfield while Adi Yussuf and Reuben Reid lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Mark Little, Tom Knowles and Alex Bradley.

Yeovil kicked off towards the away terrace.

The first half was poor from Yeovil as they were really struggling to take command of the game.

Needham Market won the first corner of the game on 7 minutes on the right hand side after some good attacking play saw a shot deflected over the bar. The corner was crossed to the near post and flicked across goal but Yeovil were able to defend the danger.

Yeovil won their first corner on 11 minutes on the right hand side which was crossed to the far post but headed wide.

The game needed a goal to try and liven things up and it came on 31 minutes for Yeovil. Adi Yussuf laid the ball off to Morgan Williams who was able to shoot from a narrow angle to put Town ahead in the tie.

Despite getting the goal it didn't liven the game up much and Yeovil continued to struggle to be creative.

Needham Market forced a couple of corners before half time but they weren't able to take advantage.

Just before half time Needham Marked levelled the scores as a free kick into the box wasn't deal with and Ben Fowkes was able to fire home.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 1-1 Needham Market

Yeovil needed to put in a much better shift in the second half but unfortunately it was worse than the first half. Needham weren't threatening Yeovil much at all but Yeovil were also struggling in front of goal and were finding it very hard to grind out chances.

Yeovil made their first substitution on 63 minutes as Adi Yussuf was replaced by Tom Knowles.

On 70 minutes Yeovil made their second substitution as Matt Worthington was replaced by Alex Bradley.

With 20 minutes remaining Yeovil were starting to put a bit more pressure on Needham Market but as has been the case throughout the game they just couldn't carve out any real opportunities.

Yeovil made their final substitution on 80 minutes as Max Hunt was replaced by Mark Little.

Five minutes of time was added on and as much as Yeovil were trying to find the winning goal it just didn't come and the game went into a penalty shootout.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 1-1 Needham Market

The penalty shootout was taken in front of the home end and in the end Needham Market edged out Yeovil 8-7 on penalties to advance to the fifth round.

It was a very poor game today, hard to watch at times. Yeovil just couldn't get going and put in one of the worst performances seen at Huish Park for a good few years now. Darren Sarll is going to have to get his players going again when to get back to winning ways.

Yeovil's season continues on Saturday afternoon as Wrexham make the trip to Huish Park. Kick off is at 3:00PM.
