Match Report - Maidenhead United v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town claimed a point on the road yesterday evening as they returned from Maidenhead United with a 1-1 draw. Olomola Olufela scored his first goal since his return to the club after 18 minutes to give Yeovil the lead but Maidenhead levelled the scores just before half time through Kane Ferdinand. Yeovil were struggling in the second half but they thought they had snatched the points in injury time through Reuben Reid but the goal was disallowed seemingly for offside and the points were shared.

Darren Sarll made two changes to the side that drew with Eastleigh a week ago last Saturday. Dale Gorman was suspended while Jordan Barnett dropped to the bench as Alex Bradley and Lawson D'Ath returned to the starting line up.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-3-3 formation with Mark Little, Luke Wilkinson, Ben Barclay and Morgan Williams in front of Grant Smith. Lawson D'Ath, Josh Staunton and Alex Bradley made up the midfield while Charlie Wakefield, Olufela Olomola and Tom Knowles lead the attack.

On the bench was Jordan Barnett, Matt Worthington, Reuben Reid, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Adi Yussuf.

Yeovil kicked off towards the canal end.

The first half was an action packed entertaining opening 45 minutes. Yeovil made a bright start to the game but it was Maidenhead who almost opened the scoring after 10 minutes. Josh Kelly managed to work his way into a good position and played it into Remy Climera but he headed the ball just over the bar.

Three minutes later Yeovil had thought they had taken the lead as they won a free kick on the right hand side of the box which was crossed to the far post by Alex Bradley. Luke Wilkinson got his head on it and found the back of the net but a foul was given in Maidenhead's favour and the goal didn't stand.

Shortly after it was Maidenhead's turn to have a goal chalked off as Remy Climera's effort was adjudged to have been offside.

On 18 minutes Yeovil did manage to take the lead as a good team move allowed Olufela Olomola to produce a great strike which nestled into the side netting.

The first half action continued and Maidenhead almost levelled the scores on 23 minutes as a free kick from just outside the box curled around the wall and struck the crossbar. Maidenhead kept the ball alive but Yeovil were able to scramble the ball away to safety.

The remainder of the wasn't as exciting as the opening 25 or so minutes but Yeovil were playing some neat football but couldn't put much further pressure on the Maidenhead goal.

Just before half time Maidenhead levelled the scores as Kane Ferdinand capitalised on a mistake from Grant Smith who dropped the ball and paid the price.

Half Time: Maidenhead United 1-1 Yeovil Town

Maidenhead were the much better side in the second half as Yeovil struggled to get going. Grant Smith made some excellent saves throughout the half to keep the scores level and most Yeovil fans were hoping we could hold on for the draw.

Yeovil made their first substitution on 56 minutes as Olufela Olomola had a knock and had had to be replaced by Reuben Reid.

Yeovil survived a bit of a scare on 62 minutes as free kick on the edge of the box was deflected just wide of the post and out for a corner which was easily defended. Lawson D'Ath was then substituted for Jordan Barnett.

Grant Smith pulled off a great save on 64 minutes as a low cross into the box was hit first time by Dan Sparkes but Smith was able to deflect the effort wide for a corner which was easily defended.

Maidenhead kept the pressure on and once again came close to taking the lead on 68 minutes. A corner from the right hand side was punched clear but they kept the ball alive and won a free kick on the right hand side near the touchline. A cross into the center of the box wasn't dealt with and after a bit of pinball in the box Smith managed to finally gather the ball.

Maidenhead made their first substitution on 77 minutes as Nathan Blissett was replaced by Reece Smith.

They made their second substitution on 83 minutes as Dan Sparkes was replaced by Shawn McCoulsky.

The final 10 minutes were a bit nervy for Yeovil as they were trying to see the game out.

Yeovil made their final substitution on 87 minutes as Alex Bradley was replaced by Adi Yussuf.

4 minutes of time was added on and in the 93rd minute Yeovil thought they had snatched all three points. A corner on the left hand side was crossed to the far post and met by Luke Wilkinson. He headed the ball to Reuben Reid who bundled the ball over the line but the linesman had his flag raised. It was unclear as to what the goal was disallowed for but rumour suggests it was ruled out for offside.

Full Time: Maidenhead United 1-1 Yeovil Town

A draw was probably the fairest result but many Yeovil fans were left very confused as to why the goal at the end was ruled out. Offside seems unlikely as Maidenhead had a player on the goal line. The only other explanation is that the ball curled out of play from the corner.

Yeovil's season continues on Saturday afternoon as they travel to face Chesterfield with the game live on BT Sport. Kick off is at5:20PM.
