Match Report - Boreham Wood v Yeovil Town Yeovil Town fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to fellow promotion hopefuls Boreham Wood at Meadow Park this afternoon. A goal on 74 minutes was enough to give the Boreham Wood the three points as Yeovil were expecting the referee to blow for a free kick which never came and Kabongo Tshimanga capitalised on the mistake. Darren Sarll made four changes to the side that started at Harrogate nearly two weeks ago - Craig Alcock returned to defence while Lee Collins also reclaimed his space in the starting XI. Matt Worthington and Chris Dagnall also returned as Yeovil were opting for experience over youth.
The first half was an even affair with neither side able to take any real control of the game. Both sides had good spells of possession but were unable to turn this into sustained pressure on the opposite goal.
Nothing more than half chances came and went and it was clear to see that the two teams were well matched.
The only chance worth noting during the first half was a deflected shot for Boreham Wood that looped over the bar on 17 minutes but it wasn't enough to worry Stuart Nelson.
As half time approached Yeovil were dealt a blow as top scorer Rhys Murphy suffered an injury and was replaced by Jimmy Smith at half time.
Half Time - Boreham Wood 0-0 Yeovil Town
The second half was much the same as the first and it was clear to see that a solitary goal for either team would probably win the game.
Yeovil did enjoy better spells of play in the second half as they were putting in more crosses and having more attempts at goal but they were unable to make them count.
Yeovil's play was also being interrupted by some poor decisions by the match officials as Boreham Wood were getting free kicks all over the pitch for very soft challenges which frustrated the away side but weren't receiving the same decisions when it was the other way round.
This didn't help matters in the build up to Boreham Wood's goal as Courtney Duffus was seemingly fouled and the Yeovil players were expecting a free kick which never came. This allowed Boreham Wood to break quickly and Kabongo Tshimanga slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give the home side the lead on 74 minutes.
With 16 minutes left on the clock it the travelling Yeovil fans were hoping that we could salvage a draw but as had been the story of the match for Yeovil they were lacking creativity in front of goal which ultimately let them down. Yeovil were pressing for an equaliser but it wasn't to be and Yeovil were sent home empty handed yet again.
Full Time - Boreham Wood 1-0 Yeovil Town
The performance today was much improved from the previous game at Harrogate but we are still lacking that cutting edge up front which cost us today. It was also disappointing in the way that we conceded as the Yeovil players switched off expecting a free kick which allowed Boreham Wood to break which only emphasises the importance of playing to the whistle.
The defeat see's Town drop to 5th place while Boreham Wood move into third. Next Saturdays home match against Wrexham will be very important as Town look to get back to winning ways in front of their home supporters.
