Match Report - Harrogate Town v Yeovil Town

Yesterday evening saw Yeovil Town put in a lackluster performance at Wetherby Road as the Glovers went down 3-0 to fellow promotion chasing Harrogate Town. A brace from George Thomson and a single goal from Jack Diamond gave the home side three points as Yeovil could muster no response.

Darren Sarll made five changes to the side that were beaten 2-1 by Notts County at the weekend - Brandon Cooper made his first start for Yeovil since joining on loan from Swansea - replacing Lee Collins.

Myles Hippolyte replaced Caleb Richards, Stuart Nelson returned in favour over Liam O'Brien and top scorers Rhys Murphy and Courtney Duffus also returned to the starting XI.

The opening exchanges were fairly even as both sides were attempting to settle themselves into the game. Most of the opening 15 minutes were played in midfield as neither side were able to press forward with any real intent.

As the half wore on it was Harrogate who were beginning to take control of the game and they were beginning to carve out opportunities. Twice in two minutes Harrogate could have taken the lead as Yeovil were carved open but thanks to some poor finishing they were unable to punish the away side.

Harrogates pressure continued as Yeovil struggled to keep hold of the ball and eventually Harrogate got their reward just before half time. John Stead laid the ball into George Thompson at the far post who gave the home side the lead.

Half Time - Harrogate Town 1-0 Yeovil Town

The second half continued in the same manner as the first with Harrogate dominating the play. It would only take six minutes after the re-start for Harrogate to double their lead as Jack Diamond broke through the Yeovil defence and hammered an effort past the helpless Stuart Nelson.

Yeovil almost pulled a goal back after this as Jimmy Smith's header was cleared off the line to preserve the home sides two goal advantage.

Harrogate wrapped up the points on 73 minutes as George Thompson got his second of the night after the Yeovil defence had failed to clear their lines.

The night got even worse for Yeovil in stoppage time as Myles Hippolyte was shown a straight red card for a harsh challenge on Will Smith.

Full Time - Harrogate Town 3-0 Yeovil Town

After last weekends improved performance against Notts County the travelling supporters had hoped that we had turned the corner and would be able to make a good account of ourselves in Yorkshire. It was not to be as Yeovil were well off the pace for the majority of the game.

It seemed as though the midfield were struggling the most as we were giving the ball away far too often and failing to attack with any purpose. This will have to be rectified quickly if Yeovil are to keep up their push for promotion back to the Football League at the first time of asking.
