Match Report - Stockport County v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town crashed out of the FA Cup this afternoon as they were defeated 3-2 in extra time by Stockport County at Edgeley Park. The 90 minutes finished 2-2 but it was Stockport who went on to win as they had come from behind twice in the opening 90 minutes and then took the lead in first half stoppage time.

Darren Sarll made 4 changes to the side that were defeated 3-1 by Hartlepool United last weekend, Ryan Burke, Lawson D'Ath, Jimmy Smith and Rhys Murphy were replaced by Josh Staunton, Charlie Lee, Chris Dagnall and Courtney Duffus.

Yeovil opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Alex Bradley, Luke Wilkinson, Josh Staunton and Carl Dickinson in front of Adam Smith while Charlie Lee, Matt Warburton and Albi Skendi made up the midfield. Chris Dagnall, Courtney Duffus and Joe Quigley led the attack.

On the bench was Daniel Leadbitter, Ryan Burke, Rhys Murphy, Jimmy Smith, Gabby Rogers, Alex John and Harry Palmer.

A minutes silence was held before the match in respect of Diego Maradona who's death earlier in the week meant that the world had lost a footballing legend.

The match couldn't have started any better for Yeovil as they took the lead with just 1 minute on the clock. Charlie Lee nicked the ball on the edge of the Yeovil penalty area and found Joe Quigley on the left hand side who drove forward and laid it back to Matt Warburton. His low shot from the edge of the box found the bottom right corner to give Town a very early lead.

3 minutes later Yeovil survived a scare as a Stockport free kick was whipped into the box and was deflected just wide for a corner which was well defended.

Just moments later another scare for Town as Stockport crossed the ball in front of the Yeovil goalmouth but thankfully there were no County players running on to tap it in.

Despite Yeovil going 1-0 up early on it was actually Stockport who where the more settled side in the opening 20 minutes and Yeovil had top soak up some pressure, defending a number of corners and just struggling to get the ball clear.

Then it was Yeovil's turn to take some control of the play as they had finally managed to get comfortable and start to enjoy some more possession, creating some half chances but not threatening to increase their lead.

Just as the half hour mark had gone it was once again Stockport who were looking the better side and were again causing Yeovil problems defensively, often having to desperately clear their lines to maintain the 1 goal advantage.

On 40 minutes Yeovil gave away a penalty as Charlie Lee fouled Ryan Crossdale in the box. John Rooney stepped up and shot hard and low to the right. Adam Smith dived the right way and got a touch on the ball but was unable to keep the ball out.

2 minutes of time was added on in the first half and it was level at the break.

Half Time: Stockport County 1-1 Yeovil Town

Stockport came out in the second half again looking the better of the two sides and Adam Smith had to make a good save on 51 minutes as a cracking shot to the near post from Adam Thomas had to be turned around the post for a corner.

On 55 minutes Yeovil made their first substitution as Alex Bradley was taken off for Daniel Leadbitter.

Yeovil continued to struggle in the second half as they found it hard to keep any sustained possession as every time they attempted to clear the ball out from defence it came straight back again as Yeovil were sitting quite deep with no attacking players staying up and that was making life difficult for Town.

Yeovil soaked up the pressure and out of nowhere took the lead again on 70 minutes as a corner to the far post found Luke Wilkinson who headed home from close range to restore Yeovi's lead.

It wouldn't last long though and just 5 minutes later Ash Palmer poked the ball home after the ball had come to him after a bit of a scramble in the Yeovil penalty area.

On 78 minutes Yeovil made their second sub of the game as Chris Dagnall was replaced by Rhys Murphy.

There was still time for a winner in normal time and Yeovil were given a golden opportunity to regain the lead for the third time as Yeovil were awarded a penalty. Luke Wilkinson stepped up to take the penalty kick who sot to the right of the goal but Ben Hinchliffe was equal to the shot and made a great save.

Neither side were able to find the winning goal in normal time so the match was heading into extra time.

Full Time: Stockport County 2-2 Yeovil Town

Yeovil made their third sub of the day as Gabby Rogers was introduced in favour of Courtney Duffus.

6 minutes into extra time Yeovil survived a major scare as a John Rooney corner was defended off the line. He was able to gather the loose ball 30 yards from goal and his shot beat Adam Smith but cannoned off the inside of the post - much to the relief of the Yeovil players.

Just 3 minutes later Stockport took the lead for the first time as a cross into the box from the left hand side from Jamie Stott found Connor Jenning who's header from six years out found the back of the net.

Extra Time Half Time: Stockport County 3-2 Yeovil Town

Yeovil knew they had to come up with an equaliser in the final 15 minutes of the match but they struggled to put any real pressure onto Stockport. The home side had the better chance to increase their lead as a free kick on the edge of the box flashed wide.

Yeovil did enjoy some late possession and were pinning Stockport back but they couldn't find a way through and Yeovil's FA Cup campaign came to an end.

Extra Time Full Time: Stockport County 3-2 Yeovil Town

So another defeat for Town but the FA Cup isn't important to us at the moment as we simply have to start climbing the table. The prize money from the cup is always welcome but sometimes it can be seen as an unwelcome distraction from what is most important.

Yeovil have a short time to prepare for their next match as they face a home fixture against Eastleigh on Tuesday evening.
