Match Report - Stockport County v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat at Stockport County in front of the BT Sport cameras tonight. Alex Reid's first half goal was enough to give the home side the points in a game where Yeovil struggled for large portions of the match.

Darren Sarll named the same starting XI as the one that beat Dover Athletic 3-1 last weekend.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Alex Bradley, Max Hunt, Matt Worthington and Michael Kelly in front of Adam Smith. Lee Collins, Tom Knowles, Albi Skendi and Josh Nuefville made up the midfield while Joe Quigley and Reuben Reid lead the attack.

Carl Dickinson, Rhys Murphy, Jimmy Smith, Matt Warburton and Chris Dagnall made the bench.

Yeovil kicked the game off attacking the home end.

Stockport started the game the better of the two sides and showed their threat early on. With just two minutes on the clock a free kick was floated into the box and by John Rooney which found Liam Hogan who headed the ball goal wards but it was a comfortable save to make for Adam Smith.

Shortly afterwards a low a cross the box from the right wasn't met by a Stockport player and Yeovil were struggling in the opening stages.

On 7 minutes another free kick was awarded to Stockport County as Richie Bennett was fouled on the edge of the area. John Rooney took the free kick and got it up and over the wall but the shot was too tame and Adam Smith was able to catch the effort.

On 13 minutes Stockport came very close to breaking the deadlock as a low cross into the box from Macauley Southam-Hales found Jordan Williams who's side footed effort flashed wide of the post.

Just one minute later Stockport won the first corner of the game on the right hand side. John Rooney crossed the ball into the box and Liam Hogan's header was just wide of the target.

Yeovil were struggling to make an impact on this game but they had a decent opportunity to test the Stockport keeper on 16 minutes as a free kick was given on the left hand side. Michael Kelly crossed the ball to the far post and found Joe Quigley but his header was well wide of the target.

Yeovil then enjoyed their best spell of the first half as they were starting to look more creative and were beginning to stop Stockport's seemingly relentless attacks but in the end Stockport took a deserved lead on 24 minutes. A long goal kick up the park was headed backwards by Lee Collins and Alex Reid picked up the ball, held off the Yeovil defenders and slotted the ball into the bottom corner to give Stockport a deserved lead.

On 32 minutes Yeovil were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position as Joe Quigley was fouled 25 yards out. Tom Knowles took the free kick but the shot hit the wall and was eventually defended away.

Stockport continued to look the better side for the remainder of the half and but they failed to increase their lead which their play would have warranted and they went in at half time with a narrow 1-0 lead.

Half Time: Stockport County 1-0 Yeovil Town

Stockport were eager to carry their dominance into the second half and they almost increased their lead in the first minute of the second half. Yeovil struggled to defend a Stockport attack and two shots from the edge of the area were blocked by defenders in the box at the last minute.

Yeovil did show some promising signs though as on 49 minutes Yeovil got into a good position which allowed Albi Skendi to shot from the edge of the area but his shot was blasted over.

Yeovil made their first substitution on 55 minutes as Joe Quigley was replaced by Rhys Murphy.

On 58 minutes Adam Smith came to Yeovil's rescue as two Stockport players were bearing down on goal with only Adam Smith to beat but he raced forward and claimed the ball to keep Yeovil in the match.

Yeovil's second substitution came on 64 minutes as Tom Knowles was replaced by Matt Warburton.

This seemed to spark Yeovil into life as they then enjoyed a good spell of possession and were suddenly the livelier of the two sides.

On 66 minutes Josh Neufville picked up the ball in midfield and drove into the box at pace before unleashing a low shot that was pushed behind for a corner.

The corner was taken by Matt Warburton which was defended away but Yeovil manage to win the ball back and then force another corner which was once again taken by Matt Warburton but they fail to capitalise.

On 74 minutes Max Hunt saw his header saved by Ben Hinchliffe following a free kick into the box.

On 75 minutes Stockport make their first substitution as Jordan Williams was replaced by Sam Minihan.

Yeovil made their final substitution on 80 minutes replacing Alex Bradley with Chris Dagnall.

The final 10 minutes were fairly open as both sides had chances but Yeovil could sense they may be able to get something out of the game if they continue to press.

Stockport made their final change on 86 minutes as Alex Reid was replaced by James Jennings.

4 minutes of time was added and Yeovil were still searching for the equalising goal but it never came and things got a bit worse for Yeovil in the 93rd minute as Lee Collins was sent off for a late high challenge on Macauley Southam-Hales.

Full Time: Stockport County 1-0 Yeovil Town

So our BT Sport curse continues on and it was a pretty disappointing performance overall from Yeovil tonight. The first half was a real struggle and they didn't really get going until Matt Warburton was introduced on 64 minutes. If it wasn't for Stockport being very wasteful with their chances the game would have been wrapped up by then.

The defeat leaves us in 19th position with 20 points but now only two points off the drop zone as Weymouth beat Bromley 2-1 at home today to move out of the relegation zone and above Kings Lynn who are on 18 points.

Yeovil are next in action on Tuesday night where they will travel to face Eastleigh at the Silverlake Stadium with a 7:00PM kick off.
