Match Report - Altrincham v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town fell to a 4-3 defeat at Moss Lane this afternoon as Altrincham was able to come out on top in this end of season dead rubber fixture. The home side took a 2-0 advantage into half time but Yeovil turned the game on it's head as goals from Emmanuel Sonupe, Joe Quigley and Charlie Lee looked to have completed the comeback for Yeovil but they couldn't hang on and two late goals sent Yeovil back down south empty handed.

Darren Sarll was forced into making a change to the side that drew 0-0 with Maidenhead United in midweek as Luke Wilkinson was suspended and was replaced by Reuben Reid.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Carl Dickinson, Billy Sass-Davies, Michael Kelly and Lawson D'Ath in front of Adam Smith. Charlie Lee, Tom Knowles, Josh Neufville and Chris Dagnall made up the midfield while Joe Quigley and Reuben Reid lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Toby Stephens, Emmanuel Sonupe and Adam Heaton.

Altrincham kicked off towards the away terrace.

Altrincham won a couple of corners straight from the kick off both from the left hand side but Yeovil were able to clear them away with no issues.

It was actually Yeovil who had the better chances in the opening 20 minutes and they looked the much more livelier side but they suffered a blow on 7 minutes as Josh Neufville went down in a heavy challenge and had to be stretchered off. He was replaced by Emmanuel Sonupe.

On 13 minutes Yeovil were unlucky not to have taken the lead as Reuben Reid received the ball in the box and unleashed a low shot that was pushed onto the post by Toby Stephens and the ball flashed across the face of goal but nobody was there to tap the ball in.

Just three minutes later Yeovil had another excellent chance to take the lead as a shot from Joe Quigley from close range was dragged wide when he should have scored.

Ultimately Yeovil were made to pay for these missed chances and they fell behind on 18 minutes as Yeovil failed to deal with an Altrincham attack and Connor Kirby was able to slam the ball home to give Altrincham the lead against the run of play.

On 22 minutes Yeovil won their first corner on the right hand side. Lawson D'Ath took the corner to the center of the box but after a bit of pinball in the box it went out for another corner on the opposite side but it came to nothing.

Since the goal Altrincham were looking the more lively side and Yeovil were struggling to create any further opportunities for most of the remainder of the half.

The only decent chance of note for Yeovil before half time was a Tom Knowles shot that flew just over the bar after a nice team moved worked a good position for him to shoot.

The injury to Josh Neufville meant there was a lot of added time to play at the end of the half. 8 minutes was initially given but it turned into 11 as during that time an Altrincham player went down and also had to receive treatment which delayed half time further.

Yeovil then found themselves 2-0 down as a cross into the box found Dan Mooney who had a free header and sent the ball back across goal and into the back of the net and Yeovil had a lot of work to do to get back into the game in the second half.

Half Time: Altrincham 2-0 Yeovil Town

Altrincham won the first corner of the second half on 48 minutes but it was easily defended as it didn't beat the first man.

Yeovil looked more settled in the second half and they pulled one back on 55 minutes as Emmanuel Sonupe ran forward with the ball and his low shot beat Tony Thompson to give Yeovil some hope.

Altrincham made their first substitution on 65 minute as Matty Kysolo was replaced by Tom Peers.

Suddenly Yeovil found themselves level as Adam Smith's long ball found Joe Quigley in space and he was able to chip the ball over Tony Thompson and now the game was truly there for the taking.

Just 4 minutes later the turnaround was complete as Charlie Lee's header from a free kick flew into the back of the net and now it looked like Yeovil would be able to get a positive result from the game.

Yeovil still had to be wary of their opponents though as on 78 minutes Yeovil had to clear an Altrincham shot off the line to preserve their lead.

Altrincham made their second substitution on 80 minutes as Connor Kirby was replaced by Tom Peers.

Two minutes later they made their final substitution as Dan Mooney was replaced by James Hardy.

Sadly - Yeovil weren't able to hold onto their lead as on 84 minutes Yeovil again failed to deal with an Altrincham attack and Tom Peers was able to bundle the ball over the line to level the scores once again.

On 88 minutes Yeovil made their second substitution as Reuben Reid was replaced by Toby Stephens.

6 minutes of time was added on and in the 91st minute Altrincham delivered a sucker punch to Yeovil as they regained the lead as Josh Hancocks's shot from close range turned the game on it's head for the second time and Yeovil had to make the long trip home with nothing to show for their efforts.

Full Time: Altrincham 4-3 Yeovil Town

The game today kind of summed up Yeovil's season really. Scoring goals wasn't a problem today but it was our inability to deal with Altrincham attacks that was our ultimate downfall. Too many times this season we have been poor in defence and we paid for it again today. It also didn't help that our squad has been decimated with injuries making things even more difficult for the team.

Yeovil's season come to an end on Saturday afternoon as Stockport County make the trip to Huish Park. Please note that kick off is at 12:30PM.
