Match Report - Yeovil Town v Kings Lynn Town

Yeovil Town's 2021-2022 season got off to a disappointing start at Huish Park this afternoon as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Kings Lynn Town. Joe Quigley gave Yeovil the lead on 15 minutes but the game suddenly became more difficult for Yeovil on 38 minutes as Matt Worthington was shown a straight red card for a harsh challenge on Tyler Denton. In the second half Kings Lynn applied pressure and eventually that pressure paid off as Ethan Coleman equalised on 71 minutes and Manashe Sundrie scored the winner 5 minutes from time.

Darren Sarll opted for what appeared to be a 5-4-1 formation with Jordan Barnett, Max Hunt, Luke Wilkinson, Morgan Williams and Matt Worthington in front of Grant Smith. Tom Knowles, Josh Staunton, Dale Gorman and Charlie Wakefield made up the midfield while Joe Quigley lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Sonny Blue Lo-Everton, Daniel Moss and Adi Yussuf.

Kings Lynn kicked off towards the home terrace.

Kings Lynn managed to win a corner in the first minute of the game - something which would become a common sight throughout the game - but the cross from the left hand side was caught by Grant Smith.

Kings Lynn were the better side early on in the game and almost took the lead on 9 minutes after a cross across the box wasn't met by a Kings Lynn player with the goal gaping.

Out of nowhere Yeovil took the lead as a cracking shot from Joe Quigley from the edge of the area flew past Paul Jones in the Kings Lynn goal.

The game seemed to settle down after that and both sides were fairly even for most of the half.

On 27 minutes Grant Smith was called into action as he had to make a decent save from Gold Omotayo's glancing header as he pushed the effort away for a corner which was headed away at the near post.

Two minutes later Kings Lynn had another corner but once again Yeovil were able to head the ball clear on the far post.

The game suddenly took a turn for the worse for Yeovil as Matt Worthington was shown a straight red card for a hard challenge on Tyler Denton and Yeovil had to play over 50 minutes of the match a man down.

3 minutes of time was added on at the end of the half and Yeovil went in at the break with a 1-0 advantage.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 1-0 Kings Lynn Town

Despite being at a disadvantage Yeovil began the second half very strongly and were looking like they were intent on being positive to try and increase their lead. On 47 minutes they won their first and only corner of the game. Dale Gorman crossed the ball to the center of the box from the left but Kings Lynn were able to head the ball clear.

It wasn't long before Kings Lynn began to play their way back into the game and were soon looking much more in control. On 54 minutes they won another corner on the right hand side but once again Yeovil were able to head the ball clear.

Kings Lynn had another corner on 60 minutes but before it was taken Yeovil made their first substitution as Tom Knowles was replaced by Daniel Moss - making his debut after signing on loan from Championship side Millwall earlier in the day. The corner for Kings Lynn was again defended.

Two minutes later another and another Kings Lynn corner was awarded but again Yeovil was able to clear the ball away - something which was encouraging to see as Yeovil seemed to be able to deal with set pieces with ease.

On 63 minutes Kings Lynn made their first substitution as Luis Fernandez was replaced by Michael Gyasi.

More corners came to Kings Lynn on 65 and 67 minutes but both times they were well defended.

Yeovil made their second substitution on 67 minutes as Jordan Barnett was replaced by Adi Yussuf.

On 70 minutes Kings Lynn finally managed to find the equaliser as a shot from Ethan Coleman looked to have been saved by Grant Smith but he wasn't able to keep the ball out and the game was once again level which had been coming for most of the second half.

On 72 minutes Kings Lynn made their second substitution as Michael Clunan was replaced by Munashe Sundire.

With the final 10 minutes approaching it was important that Yeovil could keep the game level and try to catch Kings Lynn on the break to nick the win but the more time went on there was only one team that was looking likely to win the game.

On 81 minutes Yeovil made their final substitution as Dale Gorman was replaced by Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

Two minutes later Kings Lynn also made their final substitution as Ethan Coleman was replaced by Brett McGavin.

With just five minutes of normal time remaining Kings Lynn netted the winner as Munashe Sundire's effort found the back of the net.

Five minutes of time was added on but Yeovil couldn't level the scores once more and they tasted defeat in the first game of the season.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 1-2 Kings Lynn Town

A disappointing afternoon for Yeovil Town today as the lack of threat up front was still there to see. Defensively we looked mostly OK today as we were able to deal with a lot of corners with no trouble but playing with 10 men and struggling to get up the field was bound to tell in the end and the result was a fair reflection of the game.

Yeovil now have just one day to prepare for their next game as they travel to face Aldershot Town at The Recreation Ground. Kick off is at 3PM.
