Match Report - Stockport County v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town made it three wins in a row at Edgeley Park yesterday afternoon as a brilliant team performance proved too strong for Stockport County who had to play nearly 40 minutes with ten men. Charlie Wakefield scored Towns opener midway into the first half but Stockport began to come back at us after half time. The home side were reduced to ten men as Ash Palmer was given his marching orders on 52 minutes for pulling down Tom Knowles in the box while he was in on goal and Joe Quigley converted the resulting penalty. The performance was made complete in the 86th minute as substitute Adi Yussuf capitalised on a defensive mistake to grab his first goal for the club.

Darren Sarll named an unchanged side to the team that beat Halifax Town last weekend - there weren't even any changes on the subs bench.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with Jordan Barnett, Max Hunt, Luke Wilkinson and Daniel Moss in front of Grant Smith. Tom Knowles, Josh Staunton, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Dale Gorman and Charlie Wakefield made up the midfield while Joe Quigley lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Morgan Williams, Alex Bradley, Toby Stephens and Adi Yussuf.

Yeovil kicked off towards the home end.

Both sides made a good start to the game and were playing some neat football. Stockport won the first corner of the game on 4 minutes on the left hand side which was crossed to the center of the box but Yeovil were able to head the ball away.

Yeovil had an excellent chance to take an early lead just one minute later as Tom Knowles took a quick throw in while Stockport keeper Ben Hinchliffe was out of position and Stockport's last ditch defending saw an effort on goal deflected for a corner which came to nothing.

Stockport won their second corner on 9 minutes but as has been the recurring theme this season Yeovil were able to defend it with ease.

The game began to settle down a little bit after this but Yeovil were edging the play and looking the better side.

On 22 minutes Yeovil won a succession of corners but none of them were able to trouble Stockport too much.

Just 4 minutes later though Yeovil took a deserved lead as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton played in Charlie Wakefield who's low shot across goal went in off the far post to put Yeovil 1 up.

Yeovil nearly doubled their lead in emphatic style on 32 minutes as Dale Gorman fired a thunderous shot at goal from distance but Ben Hinchliffe was able to produce a brilliant save to deny a wonder goal. The resulting corner came to nothing.

Stockport made their first substitution shortly after this as Arjan Raiky was replaced by Tom Walker.

The remainder of the half was fairly quiet and for the fourth time in a row Yeovil went in at half time with a 1-0 advantage.

Half Time: Stockport County 0-1 Yeovil Town

Stockport made their second substitution at half time as Ben Barclay was replaced by Zeki Fryers.

As was to be expected Stockport began the second half with high intensity and were putting Yeovil under a lot of pressure.

Almost straight from the kick off they won a corner which was crossed to the center but Alex Reid was only able see his header flash wide of the post.

They won another succession of corners just two minutes later but on both occasions Yeovil were able to defend.

The spell of Stockport pressure only lasted about 5 minutes before Yeovil began to calm the game down. On 51 minutes Yeovil won a corner of their own but it didn't trouble the Stockport defence.

Just one minute later Stockport's afternoon got a lot harder as Ash Palmer was shown a red card for pulling down Tom Knowles while he was in on goal and Yeovil were awarded a penalty. Joe Quigley stepped up and fired the ball low to the keepers right who went the wrong way and Yeovil now had a 2-0 advantage and a man advantage.

Yeovil continued to press their opponents and were carving out more opportunities but none of them were particularly dangerous.

On 65 minutes Stockport made their final substitution as Alex Reid was replaced by Kenan Dunnwald-Turan.

On 70 minutes Stockport wasted a golden opportunity to halve the deficit as Liam Hogan played Kenan Dunnwald-Turan in on goal but he dragged his shot wide when he should have done better.

On 75 minutes Yeovil made their first substitution as Tom Knowles was replaced by Alex Bradley.

Two minutes later Stockport again wasted a golden chance to halve the deficit as Paddy Madden capitalised on a defensive mistake from Jordan Barnett but his low shot was saved by Grant Smith for a corner but it came to nothing.

On 81 minutes Yeovil made their second substitution as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was replaced by Adi Yussuf.

It only took four minutes for Adi Yussuf to have an impact as he capitalised on a loose ball and fired past Ben Hinchliffe to cap off a fantastic afternoon for Yeovil Town.

3 minutes of time was added on and after Yeovil had made their final substitution with Charlie Wakefield being replaced by Toby Stephens - Yeovil could celebrate a simply superb victory and make the long journey back down south seem a lot shorter than it was.

Full Time: Stockport County 0-3 Yeovil Town

This was the best performance from Yeovil Town for quite some time as again we looked like a very well organised team and Stockport found it hard to play against us. The whole team put in a good shift and to keep another clean sheet is testament to how good our defence has been so far this season. It was also good to see Adi Yussuf grab his first goal for the club and hopefully that can give him some confidence for upcoming matches.

Yeovil's season continues next Saturday afternoon as Altrincham make the long trip south to Huish Park. Kick off is at 3PM.
