Match Report: Yeovil Town v Chesterfield

Yeovil Town's three game winning run came to an end at Huish Park this afternoon as they were defeated 2-0 by Chesterfield. Goals from Emmanuel Oyeleke and Kbongo Tshimanga gave Chesterfield a 2-0 half time lead which Yeovil ultimately couldn't recover from. It could have been a completely different afternoon though as Yeovil had two goals chalked off in the first half - the first for a foul on the goalkeeper and the second for offside.

Darren Sarll named an unchanged starting XI from the side that beat Stockport County last weekend. The only change to the matchday squad was on the bench as Toby Stephens was dropped for Jack Robinson.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with Jordan Barnett, Max Hunt, Luke Wilkinson and Daniel Moss in front of Grant Smith. Tom Knowles, Dale Gorman, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Josh Staunton and Charlie Wakefield made up the midfield while Joe Quigley lead the attack.

On the bench was Jack Robinson, Morgan Williams, Adi Yussuf, Alex Bradley and Max Evans.

Yeovil kicked off towards the home terrace.

The first half was an entertaining affair as both sides were playing well. Chesterfield won the first corner of the game after just two minutes which was crossed to the near post but Yeovil cleared the ball away.

10 minutes later Yeovil won their first corner which was taken short and eventually crossed into the box and even though it was well defended Yeovil still had the ball and managed to win a free kick just outside the D for hand ball but the free kick was deflected off the wall for a corner.

The corner was crossed to the center of the box and the ball was bundled over the line but it was not given as a foul on Scott Loach meant the goal was chalked off.

The disallowed seemed to give Chesterfield a sense of urgency and after a spell of good pressure they took the lead on 19 minutes as Emmanuel Oyeleke fired a good shot at goal which went in off the post.

Just one minute later Grant Smith had to make a decent save to prevent a second goal straight from the kick off.

On 21 minutes Chesterfield won another corner on the right hand side which was taken short but Yeovil manage to defend the danger for another corner which came to nothing.

On 27 minutes Yeovil were forced into making their first substitution as Luke Wilkinson had to be taken off for an injury and was replaced by Morgan Williams.

Just one minute later Yeovil again had a goal chalked off as Joe Quigley capitalised on a defensive mistake, rounded the keeper and crossed the ball into the center of the box but Chesterfield managed to poke the ball clear. Eventually the ball was fired back at goal and into the path of Tom Knowles but his effort was chalked off for being in an offside position.

Just like after the first goal it didn't take long for Chesterfield to find a goal of their own and a long ball over the top from Scott Loach allowed Kbongo Tshimanga to run in on goal and his low shot nestled into the bottom right corner to double the away side's advantage.

The remainder of the half was fairly time and after the four minutes of injury time was up Yeovil went in at the break with a lot to do in the second half.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 0-2 Chesterfield

Yeovil made their second substitution at half time as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was replaced by Adi Yussuf. Chesterfield also made a substitution as Gavin Gunning was replaced by Jeff King.

Chesterfield seemed to be happy to sit on their lead in the second half and soak up the pressure. Yeovil won a few corners early in the half but neither of them troubled Chesterfield.

The away side only appeared to be getting forward on a counter-attack which did win them a succession of corners of their own on 52 minutes but none of them troubled the Yeovil defence.

On 54 minutes Yeovil won five corners in a row which eventually ended when Scott Loach caught the fifth one and a good chance to get back into the game had gone.

Scott Loach was called into action just 4 minutes later though as Josh Stanton unleashed a long range effort at goal which he had to tip over the bar for a corner.

On 66 minutes Chesterfield made their second substitution as Calvin Miller was replaced Alex Whittle.

9 minutes later they made their final substitution as Emmanuel Oyeleke was replaced by Jake McCourt.

The final 15 minutes saw little in the way of clear cut chances. Yeovil were the side applying more pressure but they lacked the cutting edge that they needed to trouble the Chesterfield defence.

4 minutes of time was added on at the end of the game and Chesterfield took the points back up the M5 and go top of the league.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 0-2 Chesterfield

Not the result that we wanted today but Yeovil were competitive against a team that haven't lost a game yet. We didn't look particularly threatening in front of goal today but having said that we were also unlucky to have had the two goals chalked off. The first one was especially dubious as there didn't seem to be any foul play on the keeper but all a goalkeeper has to do nowadays is fall over and a free kick is given.

The second disallowed goal may have also been deflected into Tom Knowles' path off a Chesterfield defender so flagging offside may have been the incorrect decision. Either way - Yeovil still needed to be positive and get themselves back into the game in the second half but it wasn't to be.

Yeovil's season continues on Saturday afternoon as they travel to Boreham Wood for a 3PM kick off. There is also a Somerset Premier Cup match this week at Huish Park as Yeovil Town face Bridgwater United on Wednesday evening. Kick off is at 7:45PM
