Match Report: Boreham Wood v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town fell to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Boreham Wood at Meadow Park yesterday afternoon in a game where Town had to play with ten men for just under an hour of the match. Yeovil took the lead on 15 minutes through a Dale Gorman free kick but an unfortunate own goal levelled the scores 9 minutes later. Adi Yussuf was dismissed 7 minutes before half time for picking up his second yellow of the game and Boreham Wood found the winning goal through Josh Rees on 60 minutes.

Darren Sarll made two changes to the starting line up that was defeated at home to Chesterfield the previous weekend. Matt Worthington regained his place in the starting line up as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton dropped to the bench while Adi Yussuf made his first start for Yeovil as Luke Wilkinson was out with an injury.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Daniel Moss, Josh Staunton, Max Hunt and Jordan Barnett in front of Grant Smith. Matt Worthington, Dale Gorman, Charlie Wakefield and Tom Knowles made up the midfield while Adi Yussuf and Joe Quigley lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Alex Bradley, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Jack Robinson and Mitch Rose.

Yeovil kicked off towards the home terrace.

Both sides made a decent start to the game but chances in the opening 10 minutes were at a premium.

Yeovil won the first corner of the game on 10 minutes which was taken short and crossed into the box for Tom Knowles to fire at goal but his shot was headed away.

1 minute later Boreham Wood won their first corner which was crossed to the far post which Grant Smith did well to stop an effort at goal.

On 15 minutes Yeovil were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area and Dale Gorman stepped up and fired the ball low on the ground which went under the wall and under Nathan Ashmore to give Yeovil a 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later Boreham Wood won a succession of corners but on both occasions they came to nothing.

On 24 minutes Boreham Wood won a free kick in a similar position to Yeovil's earlier in the game and Kane Smith's effort was pushed around the post for a corner.

The corner was crossed into the center of the box and Grant Smith came to punch the ball away but he only managed to punch the ball into the back of Josh Staunton and the ball rebounded into the back of the net to draw the game level.

The remainder of the half was fairly tame until Yeovil were reduced to 10 men on 38 minutes as Adi Yussuf picked up his second yellow card of the afternoon after previously picking up a completely needless yellow card earlier in the game for pushing a Boreham Wood player.

Half Time: Boreham Wood 1-1 Yeovil Town

Grant Smith was called into action again just after the restart as he pushed a Tyrone Marsh free kick around the post and the resulting corner came to nothing.

Despite being town to 10 men Yeovil were still looking good and weren't looking like they were struggling in the second half. On 57 minutes Tom Knowles almost pulled the game level in spectacular fashion as he went on a dancing run through the Boreham Wood defence but his shot at goal flew wide of the post.

Just one minute later though Boreham Wood found their second of the afternoon as a close range header from Josh Rees found the back of the net.

Yeovil were still playing positive football despite being a goal and a man down at this point and Tom Knowles almost pulled the game level again on 64 minutes as he fired an effort at goal but it rebounded off the post and away.

Two good chances came and went in the space of two minutes as a Dale Gorman corner was met by Josh Staunton but his glancing header was well saved by Nathan Ashmore and just after that Joe Quigley squared the ball across for Tom Knowles who couldn't quite get to it in time.

On 71 minutes Yeovil made their first substitution as Jack Robinson made his debut appearance as he replaced Jordan Barnett.

Boreham Wood made their first substitution on 75 minutes as Frankie Raymond was replaced by Connor Smith.

4 minutes later Yeovil made their second substitution as Matt Worthington was replaced by Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

The final 10 minutes saw Yeovil pushing hard for the equaliser. They won a corner on 81 minutes which was crossed to the center of the box but headed away for a corner on the opposite side which was crossed to the far post but the shot came to nothing.

On 83 minutes Yeovil made their final substitution as Charlie Wakefield made way for Mitch Rose who also made his debut for Yeovil Town.

5 minutes of added time was given at the end and Boreham Wood could thank Nathan Ashmore for preserving the three points for them as he made some fantastic saves in the dying moments to deny Yeovil a point which they deserved.

Boreham Wood made a late substitution as Josh Rees was replaced by David Stephens and the home side were able to hold on for the points.

Full Time: Boreham Wood 2-1 Yeovil Town

For the second time in a week Yeovil have now been defeated but were certainly not outplayed even with only 10 men. A draw would have been the fairer result as Yeovil certainly warranted a point for their efforts especially in the second half.

Yeovil now have 10 days to prepare for their next fixture as they have no game this coming Saturday but they entertain Maidenhead United at Huish Park on Tuesday 5th October. Kick off is at 7:45PM.
