Match Report: Yeovil Town v Altrincham

Yeovil Town were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw with Altrincham at Huish Park yesterday evening in a game where the away side had to play an outfield player in goal for over 70 minutes of the match. Goalkeeper Anthony Thompson was deemed unfit to carry on after picking up an injury after 11 minutes and left back Connor Hampson came on to replace him. Despite this Yeovil weren't able to test him enough and despite taking the lead through a Joe Quigley tap in ex Yeovil striker A-Jay Leitch Smith scored the equaliser shortly after and Yeovil weren't able to find the second goal that they needed.

Darren Sarll made three changes to the side that was beaten 2-0 by Notts County at the weekend. Jordan Barnett, Ben Seymour and Adi Yussuf regained their places in the starting XI as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Jack Robinson were dropped to the bench while Don Periera was dropped from the side.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Jordan Barnett, Max Hunt, Josh Staunton and Dan Moss in front of Adam Smith. Dale Gorman, Tom Knowles, Ben Seymour and Matt Worthington made up the midfield while Joe Quigley and Adi Yussuf lead the attack.

On the bench was Alex Bradley, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Jack Robinson, Charlie Wakefield and Max Evans.

Altrincham kicked off towards the home terrace.

Yeovil made a lively start to the game and created far more opportunities in the opening 10 or so minutes than they had in the entire game at the weekend.

Altrincham won the first corner though on 4 minutes which came to nothing.

On 11 minutes there was a lengthy delay in play as the Altrincham goalkeeper was being treated for an injury and after a few minutes was deemed unfit to carry on. Left back Connor Hampson had to come off the bench to replace him and suddenly Yeovil were presented with a good opportunity to grab a few goals in the game.

On 18 minutes Yeovil won a free kick just outside the box on the touchline on the right hand side but they failed to put Altrincham under any pressure.

On 22 minutes Altrincham made their second substitution as Tobias Mullarkey was replaced by Dean Furman.

For most of the remainder of the half nothing of note happened for either side. Yeovil were still lacking creativity and showing signs of their poor play in the last few games.

A couple of corners came to both sides late on in the half but after the six minutes of added time was up there was little to inspire the home crowd.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 0-0 Altrincham

The second half started in a similar fashion to the first half whereby neither team looked threatening. This was particularly disappointing for Yeovil as they weren't putting the makeshift Altrincham keeper under any pressure which was frustrating.

Out of nowhere Yeovil suddenly took the lead as Yeovil won a free kick 25 yards from goal. Dale Gorman stepped up and drove the ball hard and low straight at Connnor Hampson who spilled the ball into the path of Joe Quigley who then had an easy tap in from close range.

The lead didn't last long though as Altrincham equalised just 8 minutes later through former Yeovil Town striker A-Jay Leitch-Smith who had a simple finish from close range.

Just two minutes later Yeovil almost regained the lead as a corner from the right hand side was almost bundled over the line but Connor Hampson just about kept the ball out.

On 70 minutes Altrincham made their final substitution as Matthew Kosylo was replaced by Tom Peers.

Four minutes later Yeovil made their first substitution as Tom Knowles was replaced by Charlie Wakefield.

On 79 minutes Yeovil wasted a good opportunity to regain the lead as a cross in from the right hand side fell to Joe Quigley but he couldn't get his boot on the end of it with the goal gaping.

With just 5 minutes to go once again Yeovil thought they had taken the lead as another corner from the left was almost headed in at the far post but the linesman deemed that it hadn't crossed the line.

Yeovil made their second substitution on 86 minutes as Dan Moss was replaced by Alex Bradley.

Three minutes later they made their final substitution as Matt Worthington was replaced by Jack Robinson.

3 minutes of time was added on and both sides had to settle for a point which was disappointing from a Yeovil perspective.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 1-1 Altrincham

Another frustrating afternoon at Huish Park was endured last night and there is little to excite the home faithful about the upcoming FA Cup match with Weymouth on Saturday. Yeovil simply have to improve if they are to avoid embarrassment against them but more importantly they will have to improve if we are to have a decent season in the league.

Our season continues on Saturday afternoon as Weymouth are the visitors for the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round. Kick off is at 3:00PM.
