Match Report: Weymouth v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town advanced to the first round proper of the FA Cup last night thanks to a penalty shootout win over Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium in an action packed 4th Qualifying Round Replay. Yeovil took the lead in the first half through a Matt Worthington header but Weymouth equalised late on through Josh McQuoid. Extra time saw little in the way of clear cut chances but Yeovil missed a penalty right at the death to see the game go to penalties and Yeovil Town won the shootout 2-1 to stumble into the next round.

Darren Sarll made two changes to the side that was held 1-1 with Weymouth at the weekend. Jack Robinson and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton regained their places in the starting XI as Tom Knowles and Ben Seymour dropped to the bench.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Jack Robinson, Max Hunt, Josh Staunton and Dan Moss in front of Grant Smith. Dale Gorman, Matt Worthington, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Jordan Barnett made up the midfield while Charlie Wakefield and Joe Quigley lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Tom Knowles, Lewis Simper, Adi Yussuf, Jordan Dyer and Ben Seymour.

Yeovil kicked off towards the home terrace.

As was to be expected in a game against Weymouth the game got off to a lively start.

Weymouth won the first corner on 6 minutes on the right hand side but it came to nothing.

Yeovil were playing some neat football and they got their reward on 20 minutes as Matt Worthington received a cross and headed home to put Yeovil 1-0 up.

Yeovil continued to play some nice football and were looking more in control.

On 35 minutes Yeovil won a free kick right on the goal line on the left hand side of the box which was crossed to the far post but came to nothing.

Weymouth won a couple of corners before half time but on both occasions they didn't trouble the Yeovil defence and Yeovil went in at the break with a 1-0 advantage in the tie.

Half Time: Weymouth 0-1 Yeovil Town

Weymouth made their first substitution at half time as Omar Mussa was replaced by Cameron Murray.

Unlike in the first game at Huish Park Yeovil kept their foot on the gas in the second half and were trying to kill the game off.

Yeovil won a succession of corners early on in the half but nothing came of the attempts.

Despite Yeovil pusihng hard for a second goal they got a reminder that they still needed to be careful as Weymouth almost equalised on 50 minutes Ben Thomson ran through on goal but his effort was caught by Grant Smith.

Shortly afterwards Weymouth won a corner on the right hand side which was crossed to the far post but Tom Bearwish volleyed the ball high over the bar.

Weymouth made their second substitution on 55 minutes as Bradley Ash was replaced by Josh McQuoid.

Yeovil were continuing to push forward and almost got a second goal from a corner on 62 minutes but Max Hunt wasn't able to get his head on the ball after it fell kindly to him.

On 70 minutes Yeovil again failed to take advantage of another good corner as a cross straight into the center of the box wasn't met by anybody.

On 78 minutes Yeovil had to perform some last ditch defending as Ben Thomson was running through one on one with Grant Smith but Josh Staunton was able to snuff out the danger at the last moment.

Weymouth made their third substitution on 82 minutes as Ben Thomson was replaced by Brandon Goodship.

One minute later Yeovil made their first substitution as Charlie Wakefield was replaced by Adi Yussuf.

For all of the attacking play that Yeovil enjoyed in the game they weren't able to kill the game off for good and they were made to pay for this on 87 minutes as Weymouth found the equaliser. A cross into the box from Ollie Harfield found Josh McQuoid who headed the ball beyond Grant Smith.

Yeovil tried to rally after this to regain the lead in the final few minutes but after the 4 minutes of added time were over the match would have to go into extra time.

Extra Time: Weymouth 1-1 Yeovil Town

Yeovil struggled in extra time as they weren't able to keep up the same tempo that they did in the previous 45 minutes. This allowed Weymouth to put Yeovil under more pressure and were looking the more threatening team.

Yeovil made their second substitution on 96 minutes as Jordan Barnett was replaced by Tom Knowles and then made their third substitution on 100 minutes as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was replaced by Ben Seymour.

Weymouth then made their final substitution as Tom Bearwish was replaced by Andy Robinson.

Just before half time in extra time Yeovil had thought they regained the lead as a Dale Gorman corner was met by Joe Quigley who headed the ball goalwards but Weymouth scrambled the ball away. The Yeovil players were appealing to the referee that the ball had gone over the line but the goal was not given.

Extra Time Half Time: Weymouth 1-1 Yeovil Town

Yeovil struggled even further in the second half of extra time and were the side that were hanging on for penalties.

Weymouth won a few corners early on but Yeovil were able to defend them each time.

Yeovil made their final change on 110 minutes as Matt Worthington was replaced by Lewis Simper.

Late on in the half Weymouth were presented with an opportunity to win the game as Brandon Goodship was in one on one with Grant Smith but Smith produced a good save to keep the game level.

One minute of time was added on and out of nowhere Yeovil were given a golden opportunity to win it for themselves as they were awarded a penalty for handball right in front of the travelling Yeovil support. Joe Quigley stepped up but Ross Fitzsimons was equal to the penalty, diving to his right to parry the ball away and send the game into a penalty shootout.

Full Time after Extra Time: Weymouth 1-1 Yeovil Town

The penalties were taken in front of the Yeovil fans and Weymouth went first.

Ollie McQuoid stepped up but blazed his penalty over the bar - advantage Yeovil.

Adi Yussuf stepped up and sent the keeper the wrong way to put Town 1 up in the shootout.

Tyler Cordner stepped up for Weymouth's second penalty and blazed his effort over the bar. However - thanks to some mindless morons who threw a bottle on the pitch as he stepped up to take it - it was retaken and this time he scored to make it 1-1 in the shootout.

Ben Seymour stepped up for Yeovil's second penalty and blazed it over the bar.

Sean Shields stepped up for Weymouth but Grant Smith made the save to his right.

Dale Gorman took Yeovil's third penalty and slotted it past the keeper in the bottom right corner.

Andy Robinson took Weymouth's fourth penalty but his effort hit the bar.

Tom Knowles took Yeovil's fourth penalty but blazed it wide - hitting a steward in the head in a rather comical fashion.

Brandon Goodship took Weymouth's fifth penalty but his effort was over the bar and Yeovil were able to advance to the next round.

After Penalties: Weymouth 1-1 Yeovil Town (Yeovil Town win 2-1 on penalties)

It was certainly an entertaining game at the Bob Lucas Stadium last night - made even better that Yeovil won the shootout but we got the job done in the end. We still need to be more ruthless in front of goal as Yeovil should have killed the game off in the second half but they just weren't clinical enough to take their chances.

Yeovil's season continues on Saturday afternoon as they make the long trip north to Grimsby Town. Kick off is at 3PM
