Match Report: Grimsby Town v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town suffered a 2-0 defeat against Grimsby Town at Blundell Park yesterday afternoon. A penalty from Lenell John-Lewis after 20 minutes put the home side ahead and John McAtee sealed the points late on.

Darren Sarll named an unchanged starting XI from the side that beat Weymouth on penalties in mid-week.

Yeovil lined up in the usual 4-4-2 formation with Jack Robinson, Max Hunt, Josh Staunton and Dan Moss in front of Grant Smith. Dale Gorman, Matt Worthington, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Jordan Barnett made up the midfield while Charlie Wakefield and Joe Quigley lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Tom Knowles, Lewis Simper, Adi Yussuf and Jordan Dyer.

Yeovil kicked off towards the home end.

The game got off to a fairly even start but the opening 20 minutes or so were very quiet from both sides with neither team looking threatening.

Suddenly Grimsby were awarded a penalty on 20 minutes after Grant Smith needlessly fouled Will Bapaga in the box and Lenell John-Lewis stepped up and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to give the home side the lead.

The rest of the half was again fairly tame. Yeovil were matching Grimsby but weren't very creative in front of goal.

Yeovil won the first corner of the game on 40 minutes which was crossed to the near post but Grimsby were able to clear the ball away.

Half Time: Grimsby Town 1-0 Yeovil Town

Grimsby almost doubled their lead shortly after half time as Harry Clifton unleashed a shot at goal which was parried away for a corner by Grant Smith. The corner passed along the ground to the edge of the area but Yeovil were able to clear the ball away.

Shortly afterwards Yeovil won another corner on the left hand side which was crossed to the center of the box but cleared away.

The half continued in a similar fashion to the first whereby Yeovil weren't being outplayed by their hosts but they just didn't threaten enough to find a goal.

Grimsby made their first substitution on 64 minutes as Alex Hunt was replaced by Giles Coke.

Grimsby missed a golden chance on 68 minutes as Lenell John-Lewis received the ball from Joh McAtee with the goal gaping but he could only drag his effort wide when it seemed like he was destined to score.

Shortly afterwards Grimsby made their second substitution as Will Bapaga was replaced by Erico Sousa.

Two minutes later Yeovil made their first substitution as Joe Quigley was replaced by Adi Yussuf.

On 77 minutes Grimsby's Ryley Towler made a superb last minute challenge on Charlie Wakefield to prevent him from shooting and the ball went out for a corner on the left hand side which came to nothing.

Yeovil made their second substitution on 78 minutes as Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was replaced by Tom Knowles.

Grimsby made their final substitution on 82 minutes as Harry Clifton was replaced by Seb Revan.

One minute later Yeovil were given a decent opportunity to equalise as they were awarded a free kick 25 yards out. Just before it was taken Yeovil made their final substitution as Jordan Barnett was replaced by Lewis Simper.

The free kick was taken by Dale Gorman but it was straight at the keeper who parried it away for a corner on the right hand side which came to nothing.

3 minutes of time was added on and with 2 minutes of it still to play Grimsby made sure of the points as Yeovil failed to clear their lines and John McAtee fired the ball beyond Grant Smith to seal victory for the home side.

Full Time: Grimsby Town 2-0 Yeovil Town

Going away to the league leaders is never an easy thing to do and Yeovil certainly weren't outplayed yesterday. The concern is that we again struggled to create chances and never really looked like scoring. The winless run in the league now stretches to 6 games and Yeovil will need to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later.

The defeat leaves us in 15th place after 10 games played with 11 points, 3 points off the relegation places so it is important that Yeovil can improve soon to avoid slipping further down the table.

Yeovil's season continues on Tuesday evening as Woking are the visitors to Huish Park. Kick off is at 7:45PM
