Match Report - Yeovil Town v Notts County

Yeovil Town's FA Trophy campaign came to an end this afternoon at Huish Park as the Glovers were beaten 2-1 by Notts County. Goals from Connell Rawlinson and Kyle Wotton were enough to see County progress despite substitute Courtney Duffus grabbing a goal to set up a nervy finish for the away side.

Darren Sarll made four changes to the side that were held to a draw against Chorley last weekend - Norwich City loanee Caleb Richards made his first start for the club and Remeao Hutton, Albi Skendi and Chris Dagnall also reclaimed their spot in the starting XI.

The game started off very brightly for the home side as two good chances came Yeovil's way in the opening four minutes. Just two minutes into the game a Remeao Hutton cross was met by Chris Dagnall but his header was well saved by Notts keeper Joe McDonnell.

Two minutes later Charlie Lee almost caught County out as his shot from distance was spurned but County were able to clear their lines.

Despite the bright start for the home side it was Notts County who got the opening goal. Some poor defending from Town allowed County to apply some sustained pressure and the ball eventually fell to Connell Rawlinson who headed the ball home.

This setback didn't stop Yeovil from creating chances and just a minute later a golden chance went begging as Remeao Hutton's cross found Jimmy Smith who's flicked header was almost converted by Marc Richards but he couldn't connect from only two yards out

Yeovil were given an unexpected advantage in the game on 37 minutes as Notts County were reduced to 10 men. Wes Thomas was shown a straight red card for violent conduct on Luke Wilkinson.

With a man advantage Yeovil could try and assert themselves into the game but they went in at half time trailing by a single goal.

Half Time - Yeovil Town 0-1 Notts County

The second half saw Yeovil apply constant pressure on the Notts County goal but they were failing to create any decent opportunities to draw the match level again.

Despite Yeovil pushing hard for an equaliser Notts County doubled their advantage as Kyle Wootton hammered a shot against the bar and the ball bounced over the line for 2-0 on 69 minutes.

Yeovil did managed to pull one back on 77 minutes as substitute Courtney Duffus fired past McDonnel to set up a nervy finish to the game for the away side.

In the immediate aftermath of the goal Notts County's Damien McCrory needed treatment for an injury and was deemed unfit to continue. Notts County had already made all three substitutes and so were forced to see the game out with only nine men.

With Yeovil now having a two man advantage they threw everything at Notts County to find an equaliser in the last ten minutes. A succession of corners and sustained pressure meant County were pinned back inside their own half but as the end of the game approached it seemed less likely that we'd managed to find the all elusive second goal.

Six minutes of time was added on at the end but it passed without incident and Notts County progressed to the Quarter Finals of the 2019-2020 FA Trophy.

Full Time - Yeovil Town 1-2 Notts County

A disappointing result for Yeovil today but the performance was much improved over the last two games. Yeovil showed their flowing passing ability that they'd lacked recent weeks and were able to create a number of good opportunities throughout the match. The good performance today will hopefully set us up nicely for Tuesday's league game at Harrogate which will be seen as a much more important game than today.
