Match Report - Frome Town v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town claimed their first win of their 2020-2021 pre-season schedule tonight as they came from behind to overcome Frome Town 2-1 in an entertaining game at Badgers Hill. Goals from Albi Skendi and a deflected shot from Carl Dickinson put Yeovil 2-1 up after Kane Simpson had given the hosts the lead in the first half.

Just like in the first pre-season game up at Stratford last weekend Yeovil fielded a mixture of first team players and trialists. Darren Sarll named Daniel Leadbitter in his starting XI just hours after he had signed on and Josh Staunton, Lee Collins and two un-named trialists completed the back five in front of a trialist goalkeeper.

Lawson D'Ath was included in midfield which also consisted of Jimmy Smith and Gabriel Rogers with Courtney Duffus up front with an un-named trialist.

Yeovil started the brighter of the two teams and created some good chances early on. Just four minutes into the game they almost took the lead but the shot was just wide.

6 minutes later Yeovil almost gave the hosts the lead after the trialist goalkeeper was involved in a mix up but to his credit he was able to pull off a good save to make up for the mistake.

On 15 minutes Yeovil almost went ahead as some good build up play saw Yeovil put the ball in the box but the Frome keeper was equal to the shot and parried the ball away.

As the half wore on Frome started to settle into the game and were playing some neat football, winning tackles and putting Yeovil under some pressure.

Frome deservedly took the lead on the half hour as Kane Simpson unleashed a fantastic shot from the edge of the box which flew into the top corner.

Just before half time they almost doubled their advantage but the shot was just over the bar.

Half Time: Frome Town 1-0 Yeovil Town

The second half started with Yeovil more settled in the game and were starting to show their class. They almost pulled the match level 10 minutes after the restart but the Frome keeper was equal to the shot.

On 65 minutes Yeovil were presented with a good opportunity after the Frome keeper handled the ball just outside of the area - picking up a yellow card in the process. The free kick was in a great position just outside the area and Rhys Murphy stepped up and shot but once again the keeper was able to parry it away.

5 minutes later Yeovil were awarded another free kick on the other side of the goal however the shot was pushed behind for a corner. The corner was crossed into the box and Albi Skendi was unlucky not to score as he saw his header flash wide of the post.

Just 3 minutes later Albi Skendi got his goal as Yeovil nicked the ball in midfield and Skendi drove forward and unleashed a shot that went in off the underside of the bar.

The game then took an ugly turn when Charlie Lee got involved in a spat with a Frome player which ended up in a mass brawl from both teams. After the dust had settled the referee sent Charlie Lee off along with a Frome player to ensure both teams ended the game with 10 men.

On 80 minutes Yeovil took the lead as a shot from Carl Dickinson was deflected off a Frome defender which went in off the underside of the bar.

The final 10 minutes were fairly flat where not many chances came for either side and Yeovil were able hold on to the win.

Full Time: Frome Town 1-2 Yeovil Town

So a positive result for Yeovil tonight which on reflection from the game was deserved. Frome had the better of the first half but Yeovil really showed their class in the second and created some great chances.

Yeovil's pre-season schedule continues on Tuesday night when they make the short trip up the M5 to face Weston-Super-Mare. Kick off is at 7PM.
