Match Report: Yeovil Town v Gateshead

Yeovil Town are through to the 2nd Round of the FA Cup as they overcame National League side Gateshead 3-2 at Huish Park. Town raced into an early lead through Rhys Murphy and they doubled the advantage on 26 minutes through Jordan Stevens. Town went 3-0 up on 63 minutes with Murphy's second but Gateshead pulled a goal back on 67 minutes from the penalty spot. Deep into injury time Gateshead made it 3-2 but Yeovil were able to see the game out to progress.

Mark Cooper made two changes to the side that beat Braintree Town last weekend. Jordan Young and Sonny Cox were dropped to the bench as Frank Nouble and Rhys Murphy took their places.

Yeovil opted for a 4-4-2 formation with Alex Whittle, Jake Wannell, Morgan Williams and Michael Smith in front of Joe Day. Will Dawes, Matt Worthington, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Michael Stevens were in midfield while Rhys Murphy and Frank Nouble were up front.

On the bench was Jake Hyde, Jordan Maguire-Drew, Jordan Young, Josh Owers, Alex Fisher, Zac Bell, Sonny Cox and Josh Staunton.

Gateshead kicked off towards the home end.

Within three minutes Yeovil were ahead when a goal kick up to Rhys Murphy was expertly controlled and poked beyond Archie Mair in the Gateshead goal. The ball probably took a deflection off a Gateshead defender but the goal was attributed to Rhys Murphy.

Gateshead settled into the game after this and were the side that were creating the more chances. Yeovil were able to deal with them though and Gateshead weren't really threatening to level the game.

On 21 minutes Yeovil saw an effort blasted just over the bar from close range when a ball in from the left found Jordan Stevens who couldn't keep his shot down.

Five minutes later Town found the second goal when a fantastic team move involving Jake Wannell and Rhys Murphy allowed Murphy to put a great ball through for Jordan Stevens to run on and fire the ball past Mair into the far corner.

The rest of the half was fairly un-eventful. Yeovil were playing some good football and Gateshead were struggling to assert themselves. Town went in at the break deservedly ahead.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 2-0 Gateshead

Neither side made changes at half time and Yeovil continued to impress.

Town went 3-0 up on 63 minutes when Frank Nouble did well on the right side and put a ball into the box which was blocked but Murphy robbed the ball off the defender and fed it to Stevens who's shot was blocked but the rebound fell to Murphy and he fired home.

Gateshead made a double substitution on 64 minutes as Kyron Lofthouse and Callum Whelan were replaced by Jordan Hunter and Billy Chadwick.

On 67 minutes Gateshead were awarded a penalty when Marcus Dinanga fell over in the box after being breathed on by Michael Smith and the referee pointed to the spot. He stepped up and sent Joe Day the wrong way to make it 3-1.

Both sides made substitutions in quick succession as Yeovil replaced Will Dawes with Jordan Young on 70 minutes and then Rhys Murphy with Jake Hyde on 72 minutes. Gateshead replaced Stephen Wearne with Aidan Rutledge.

Yeovil made their final substitutions on 79 minutes when Frank Nouble and Jordan Stevens were replaced by Zac Bell and Sonny Cox.

Gateshead also made their last substitution on 81 minutes when Connor McBride was replaced by Luke Hannant.

As full time approached Yeovil were looking comfortable. 7 minutes of time was added on and in the 95th minute Gateshead made it 3-2 when a shot from Aiden Rutlede deflected off Jake Wannell and looped over Joe Day. It hit the crossbar and Marcus Dinanga was there to head it into the net. A last push by Gateshead came to nothing and Yeovil progressed to the 2nd Round.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 3-2 Gateshead

The draw for the next round is on Sunday afternoon and Yeovil will have to wait and see who they will be drawn against as they bid to reach the 3rd Round.

Yeovil's next fixture is on Tuesday when we travel to Torquay United. Kick off is at 7:45PM.
