Match Report: Tonbridge Angels v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town returned to winning ways yesterday afternoon as they came away from Kent with all three points with a 4-2 victory over Tonbridge Angels. Town took a 2-0 lead inside the opening 17 minutes as Jordan Young and Jake Wannell capitalised on an excellent start for Yeovil. Tonbridge instantly got back into it with a goal through Nathan Odokonyero two minutes later but Jake Wannell restored the two goal lead from a corner on 65 minutes. Tonbridge made it 3-2 on 89 minutes to set up a nervy finish but Town made sure of the points with a break-away goal from Matt Worthington.

Mark Cooper made two changes to the side that lost 2-1 at Maidstone last weekend. Dylan Morgan and Michael Smith returned to the starting lineup as Josh Owers and Jay Foulston dropped to the bench.

Yeovil opted for a 4-5-1 formation with Alex Whittle, Jake Wannell, Morgan Williams and Michael Smith in front of Joe Day. Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Matt Worthington were just in front of the back four while Dylan Morgan, Frank Nouble and Jordan Young were supporting Sam Pearson up front.

On the bench was Jordan Stevens, Josh Owers, Will Dawes, Alex Fisher and Jay Foulston.

The opening 20 minutes were superb from Yeovil, dominating the game and looking to put Tonbridge on the back foot right from the kick off.

With 11 minutes played it was 1-0 to Yeovil when Dylan Morgan did well to run through some Tonbridge players and fed a neat ball into Jordan Young who took it on and fired the ball past Jonathan Henly.

Six minutes later it was 2-0 when a corner kick to Jake Wannell was headed at goal and it took a deflection off a Tonbridge defender to take it past Henly.

With Yeovil playing so well and a 2-0 advantage early on it seemed like Yeovil were well on their way to an emphatic victory, but it turned out to be far from that. Two minutes later Tonbridge pulled a goal back after some poor defending allowed Nathan Odokonyero to fire a superb strike past Joe Day.

Yeovil struggled through the remainder of the half, their dominance of possession was suddenly gone and it was Tonbridge who looked most likely to get the next goal.

Paris Lock almost levelled the game on 30 minutes when his shot was dragged just wide and two minutes later Sean Shields saw his strike fly just past the post.

Yeovil were the side hanging on for half time and fortunately they went in with a 2-1 lead.

Half Time: Tonbridge Angels 1-2 Yeovil Town

Yeovil replaced Alex Whittle with Dylan Morgan at half time and the opening 10 minutes were fairly tame, neither side creating chances.

Town were awarded a free kick right on the edge of the area on 56 minutes and Jordan Young stepped up to try and increase the lead but his effort was over the bar.

Tonbridge made their first substitution on 60 minutes when Paris Lock was replaced by Lewis Gard.

Nerves were calmed on 64 minutes when Yeovil made it 3-1. A corner from the right side once again found Jake Wannell and his superb header found the back of the net. No deflection needed this time.

Straight after the goal Yeovil replaced Dylan Morgan with Jordan Stevens and five minutes later Tonbridge replaced Mohammad Dabre with Jonathan Greenidge.

Yeovil were still not at their best during the second half but they had the two goal cushion which made things fairly comfortable. Tonbridge were the side pushing more but as time ticked away it felt like Yeovil had this game wrapped up.

Town made their last substitution on 82 minutes when Sam Pearson was replaced by Alex Fisher and two minutes later Tonbridge replaced Scott Wagstaff with Francis Mampolo.

On 89 minutes the game suddenly got very uncomfortable for Yeovil as Tonbridge made it 3-2. Yeovil failed to deal with the ball in the box and Kodi Lyons-Foster tucked it home.

Five minutes of time was added on and Yeovil were hanging on. Tonbridge keeper Jonathan Henly almost became a hero for them when he came up for a corner and almost made contact with the ball as Yeovil were trying their best to preserve the lead.

Thankfully Yeovil found another goal to make the result safe. Yeovil launched a superb counter attack and Matt Worthington was fed through and he beat Henly to seal the points.

Full Time: Tonbridge Angels 2-4 Yeovil Town

After the defeat at Maidstone last weekend it was good to return to winning ways and keep our 10 point lead at the top of the table. It certainly could have been a much more comfortable afternoon as Town seemed to let the home side back in at 2-0 but we got the job done and that is all that matters in the end.

Our next fixture is on Saturday afternoon as Havant & Waterlooville visit Huish Park. Kick off is at 3:00PM
