Match Report - Kings Lynn Town v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town kicked off the 2020-2021 National League season by claiming a 2-2 draw with newly promoted Kings Lynn Town at The Walks Stadium in a match that was broadcast live on BT Sport. Yeovil twice lead in the match only to be pegged back again as goals from Luke Wilkinson and Courtney Duffus were cancelled out by Dale Southwell and Adam Marriott.

Darren Sarll opted for a 4-4-2 formation with Adam Smith in goal and Daniel Leadbitter, Lee Collins, Luke Wilkinson and Carl Dickinson in defence while the midfield was made up of Charlie Lee, Josh Staunton, Matt Worthington and Jack Clarke. Courtney Duffus and Rhys Murphy lead the attack

The opening exchanges were fairly tame with neither side threatening the opposite keeper. Kings Lynn edged the play in the first 15 minutes as they were enjoying more possession but Yeovil were able to keep their composure and continued to play their own game.

All of a sudden Yeovil almost took the lead as Rhys Murphy was put through on goal but he was under pressure from a defender and the on-rushing keeper and he sliced his shot wide.

2 minutes later Yeovil had a scare of their own as as a cross into the box had to be cleared over the crossbar by Luke Wilkinson.

The rest of the half passed without incident as it was clear to see that Kings Lynn and Yeovil were willing to be patient with their play and no further opportunities were being created.

Half Time: Kings Lynn Town 0-0 Yeovil Town

The second half couldn't have started better for Yeovil as 1 minute after the re-start they took the lead after Yeovil were awarded a free kick. Carl Dickinson crossed the ball into the box and Luke Wilkinson was able to head the ball past Alex Street.

Yeovil made their first substitutions on 59 minutes as Matt Worthington and Jack Clarke were replaced by Lawson D'Ath and Jimmy Smith.

One minute later Yeovil had thought they had doubled their advantage as they had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside.

Despite being a goal down Kings Lynn were still playing positive football and they were beginning to cause Yeovil some problems. Adam Smith had to produce a fine save to preserve Yeovil's lead on 72 minutes after Kings Lynn split the Yeovil defence open on the counter attack.

4 minutes later Kings Lynn pulled the match level as Dayle Southwell slotted the ball into the bottom corner after a scramble in the box fell kindly to his feet. Yeovil players were protesting the goal for a suspected hand-ball but after the referee had consulted with the linesman the goal stood.

Just 5 minutes later Yeovil regained their lead after Lawson D'Ath played a great pass to Courtney Duffus who produced a cracking shot that flew into the back of the net.

The lead didn't last long though as Kigns Lynn once again levelled the match on 87 minutes after a good cross into the box was turned into the bottom corner by Adam Marriott.

Shortly after this Yeovil made their final substitution as Charlie Lee was replaced by Ryan Burke.

4 minutes of injury time was added on at the end of the game but neither side were able to snatch a late winner and Yeovil returned to Somerset with a point.

Full Time: Kings Lynn Town 2-2 Yeovil Town

It was good to finally get the season kicked off after such a long delay and the result was a fair reflection of the match. Playing away from home to a newly promoted side is always going to be hard to predict but Yeovil made a good account of themselves and registered their first point of the season.

Yeovil now have two home games in quick succession as they host another newly promoted side on Tuesday as Wealdstone come to Huish Park and on Saturday Wrexham are the visitors.
