Match Report - Yeovil Town v Sutton United

Yeovil Town slipped to their second defeat of the season at Huish Park tonight as they were beaten 2-1 by Sutton United in a poor performance throughout for Town. Sutton took the lead just 10 minutes in through Harry Beautyman but Town levelled the gam in the fourth minute of first half stoppage time through Joe Quigley. Sutton were then awarded a penalty for handball 3 minutes into the second half and Yeovil were unable to respond to this setback.

Darren Sarll made 1 change to the side that overcame Dover Athletic on penalties on Saturday as Luke Wilkinson was re-introduced after his one match ban had ended taking Carl Dickinson's place in defence.

Once again Yeovil opted for 3 at the back with Dan Leadbitter, Josh Staunton and Luke Wilkinson in front of Adam Smith while Gabby Rogers, Albi Skendi, Charlie Lee, Lawson D'Ath and Matt Warburton made up the defence. Once again Joe Quigley partnered up with Rhys Murphy in attack.

The game was scheduled to kick off at 7.45PM however the kick off had to be delayed as there was an electrical issue with one of the floodlights but thankfully the issue was sorted and the game kicked off at 8.10PM.

The opening 10 minutes of the match were fairly scrappy and neither side were able to put any neat passing moves together but it was Sutton who got off to the better start as they took the lead just 10 minutes in. A throw in on the far side allowed Sutton to get into a dangerous area and Harry Beautyman converted from close range to put the away side ahead.

It was more of the same sort of play from both sides for the remainder of the half as both Sutton and Yeovil were struggling to play any fluid passing football but in all fairness it was Sutton who were creating the better chances.

Yeovil were forced into making their first substitute of the game on 37 minutes as Josh Staunton had to be stretchered off after a harsh challenge and Carl Dickinson was introduced to replace him.

Due to this lengthy stop there were five additional minutes added at the end of the first half and from out of nowhere Yeovil were level in the fourth minute of injury time as Charlie Lee found himself in loads of space on the right hand side and had time to deliver a perfect cross into the box which was met by Joe Quigley who was able to pull Town level.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 1-1 Sutton United

Yeovil almost had a disastrous start to the second half as Lawson D'Ath played a long back pass which fell short and Sutton had a good chance to punish Town but Yeovil hastily managed to clear the ball away.

Just moments later Yeovil gave away a penalty as Luke Wilkinson fouled Isaac Olaofe who was in on goal. Harry Beautyman stepped up to take the penalty and smashed it hard straight down the middle with Adam Smith diving to his right to give the away side the lead for the second time.

Yeovil continued to struggle to put Sutton under any sustained pressure and they almost went 3-1 down on the hour mark as Sutton attacked down the right and a cut back into the box was quickly fired at goal but Adam Smith made a crucial stop to deny Sutton a third goal.

On 68 minutes Yeovil made their second substitution of the game as Matt Warburton was replaced by Jimmy Smith.

Three minutes later Yeovil were appealing for a penalty as a corner kick delivered into the box appear to have hit the hand of a Sutton player and despite loud protests from the home side the referee was un-moved.

Yeovil made their final substitution on 78 minutes as Jack Clarke was brought on for Charlie Lee who was already on a yellow card and was in danger of picking up a second yellow.

On 87 minutes Yeovil were once again appealing for a penalty as a shot that was parried away by Dean Bouzanis in the Sutton goal was being chased down by Rhys Murphy but before he could get there he was brought down however once again nothing was given from the referee much to the disappointment of the Yeovil players and coaching staff.

4 minutes of time was added on at the end and Sutton had to finish the game with 10 men as Coby Rowe went down injured after a challenge from Albi Skendi and he was deemed unfit to carry on. With Sutton having used all their subs they had to soak up any late onslaught from Yeovil to win the game.

Right at the death Yeovil won a corner and the ball did end up in the back of the net but it was ruled out for offside although it probably wouldn't have counted anyway as Dean Bouzanis was fouled in the build up to the goal.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 1-2 Sutton United

So another game goes by without a league win for Yeovil which Darren Sarll and his coaching staff will be hoping to rectify on Saturday afternoon when they host Chesterfield. Yeovil were not at their best throughout the game tonight and Sutton thoroughly deserved their win.

Despite the lackluster performance from Town it was unfortunate that Yeovil weren't given at least one penalty tonight which could have made things different and it seems to be a bit of a common theme in recent games that we aren't having our fair share of refereeing decisions go in our favour. Never thought I'd say this a few years ago but I kind of miss the refereeing that we used to have in League Two!
