Match Report - Yeovil Town v Welling United

Yeovil Town advanced to the second round of the FA Trophy this afternoon after overcoming National League South side Welling United 3-1 at Huish Park.

Darren Sarll opted to rest a few first team regulars as Rhys Murphy, Carl Dickinson and Charlie Lee all dropped to the bench.

The opening 20 minutes of the game was fairly un-eventful but Yeovil were showing their class without capitalizing on the chances they were creating.

8 minutes into the match Yeovil almost took the lead as James Tilley's shot from distance beat Welling keeper Daniel Wilks but the ball hit the crossbar.

Chris Dagnall had a great chance on 20 minutes as he was played through on goal by Albi Skendi but he dragged the shot wide of the post.

With all the chances being created by Yeovil it seemed only a matter of time before they were rewarded and on 31 minutes that reward arrived in the shape of a Courtney Duffus goal. A cross into the box by Remeao Hutton wasn't dealt with by Daniel Wilks and Courtney Duffus managed to capitalise on the mistake to give Town the lead.

Half Time Yeovil Town 1-0 Welling United

The second half couldn't have started better for Yeovil as a corner from Lawson D'Ath in the 48th minute was headed in by Chris Dagnall and Yeovil were well on their way to claiming a spot in the second round.

Just 5 minutes later Yeovil made it 3-0 as Courntey Duffus ran into the penalty area and slammed a superb shot beyond Daniel Wilks to increase their lead even further.

Welling almost made it 3-1 on 63 minutes as a scrambled goal-line clearance from Matt Worthington ensured the 3 goal lead was preserved. That was the best chance Welling had up to that point as before they had struggled to go forward with any real intent as the Yeovil defence were able to deal with any Welling attack.

Yeovil almost made it 4-0 as a thunderous long range shot from James Tilley almost dipped under the bar but instead it hit the roof of the net with a few Yeovil fans in the ground thinking it had gone into the top corner.

Welling did eventually manage to pull a goal back on 87 minutes as Rob Swaine headed past Stuart Nelson but as Yeovil still had a two goal advantage it was a little too late to cause any worries amongst the Yeovil fans.

5 minutes of additonal time were added but this passed without incident and Yeovil advance to second round with a comfortable victory.

Full Time Yeovil Town 3-1 Welling United

On reflection of the game it was a very professional performance from Yeovil as they did exactly what they needed to do at the right time. Playing teams who sit below you in the footballing pyramid can be troublesome but Yeovil dealt with it very well and also minimized the risk for any injuries to key players ahead of our trip to AFC Fylde at the weekend.
