Match Report: Bromley v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town finally got their first National League win of the season as they put in a professional and composed performance against Bromley at Hayes Lane. First half goals from Rhys Murphy and Joe Quigley put Yeovil in command of the fixture but Bromley pulled one back through Michael Cheek to set up a nervy end to the game but Yeovil were able to see the game out to pick up their first win of the season.

Darren Sarll made 4 changes to the side that were beaten 3-1 by Eastleigh last Tuesday night as Chris Dagnall, Tom Knowles and Courtney Duffus were dropped to the bench while Josh Staunton was ruled out through injury. Daniel Leadbitter, Rhys Murphy, Emmanuel Sonupe and Joe Quigley took their places.

Yeovil opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Carl Dickinson, Luke Wilkinson, Gabriel Osho and Daniel Leadbitter in front of Adam Smith while the midfield was made up of Matt Warburton, Charlie Lee and Albi Skendi. Joe Quigley, Rhys Murphy and Emmanuel Sonupe lead the front line.

Matt Worthington, Courtney Duffus, Tom Knowles, Josh Neufville and Chris Dagnall were named on the bench.

Bromley were able to have a number of home supporters present for the game however no away supporters were allowed to attend the game due to the current coronavirus restrictions.

Yeovil started the game positively and were putting Bromley under pressure right from the start and Bromley struggled to clear the ball away.

Seven minutes into the game Yeovil took a deserved lead through Rhys Murphy as a corner from Matt Warburton was crossed into the center of the box and the Bromley defenders couldn't deal with it. The ball eventually fell to Murphy who tapped in from close range to give Town a 1-0 lead.

This was a good start for Town and to be able to get their reward for their early good play gave them some confidence.

The next 20 minutes Yeovil were looking fairly comfortable but they weren't able to keep up the intensity of the first 7 minutes as Bromley had settled into the game following the goal.

Just before the half hour mark Yeovil almost increased their lead as Rhys Murphy was fouled just outside the box and Yeovil were awarded a free kick. Matt Warburton stepped up and drew a good save from Mark Cousins who had to turn his effort around the post.

On 34 minutes Bromley had a good chance to draw the game level as a cross to the far post found Michael Cheek who headed the ball down towards goal but it was just wide of the target.

3 minutes of time was added on at the end of the half and in the first minute of added time Joe Quigley doubled Yeovil's advantage as a corner from Carl Dickinson found Joe Quigley who headed home for a 2-0 advantage right before the end of the half.

Half Time: Bromley 0-2 Yeovil Town

Yeovil had a good advantage going into the second period but they knew they had to keep their focus and composure if they were to get all three points and Bromley reminded them of this on 53 minutes as Bromley got themselves into a great position after a cross into the box from Luke Coulson caused Yeovil hastily defend the ball away as neither Michael Cheek or Reeco Hackett could put the ball away.

Bromley made their first substitution of the game on 56 minutes as James Alabi was replaced by Ben Williamson.

They made their second and final sub of the game on 67 minutes as Korey Roberts was replaced by Frankie Raymond.

On 70 minutes the deficit was halved as Bromley pulled one back as Reeco Hackett's cross into the box found Michael Cheek who's header across goal beat Adam Smith to set up a nervy last 20 minutes for Town.

The goal gave Bromley a boost in confidence and straight after the goal they were pushing for an equaliser but Yeovil showed they weren't going to give up the lead that easily and were creating chances of their own - forcing corners while a good shot from Emmanuel Sonupe was blocked.

On 73 minutes Yeovil made a double substitution as Emmanuel Sonupe and Rhys Murphy was replaced Courtney Duffus and Tom Knowles.

As the game entered it's final stages Yeovil were soaking up pressure from the home side and it was a nervy end to the game. Yeovil had a major scare as a cross flashed across the box but luckily for Yeovil there was no Bromley player there to convert the chance.

Four minutes of time was added on at the end of the game and Yeovil almost put the game beyond any doubt as a shot from Courtney Duffus was well saved by Mark Cousins but in the end it mattered little as the final whistle finally blew and Yeovil could celebrate their first National League win of the season.

Full Time: Bromley 1-2 Yeovil Town

After such a long run without a win it was a relief to see the team get their first three points but also the performance from the players warranted the win. They put in a very professional performance and they got their reward which will hopefully give them confidence going forward.

The victory lifts Town off the bottom of the table and now just one point from safety with 8 points from 11 games played.

Yeovil now face a home game against Notts County on Saturday which will hopefully the first league game played in front of supporters for the first time since February which will hopefully give the players even more of a boost with the home supporters there to cheer them on.
