Match Report - Torquay United v Yeovil Town

Torquay United claimed revenge for their 6-2 defeat exactly a year ago as they humiliated Yeovil Town 6-1 at Plainmoor this afternoon. Yeovil found themselves 4-0 behind at half time and by the time the 90 minutes were over they had been well and truly beaten by a side that were a class above them.

Darren Sarll made two changes to the side that defeated Bromley 2-1 18 days ago. The suspended Luke Wilkinson was replaced by new loan signing Max Hunt and Rhys Murphy was replaced by Chris Dagnall.

Yeovil opted for a 4-4-2 formation with Adam Smith in goal and Carl Dickinson, Daniel Leadbitter, Max Hunt and Gabriel Osho in front of him. Charlie Lee, Matt Warburton, Albi Skendi and Emmanuel Sonupe made up the midfield while Joe Quigley and Chris Dagnall lead the attack.

On the bench was Matt Worthington, Lawson D'Ath, Courtney Duffus, Tom Knowles and Harry Palmer.

Torquay kicked the game off attacking the away terrace with the strong wind behind them.

Straight from the kick off Torquay showed their intentions by winning their first corner within 30 seconds which was delivered into the box. Ben Whitfield shot at goal after a scramble in the box but it didn't trouble Adam Smith.

Just five minutes into the match Torquay were awarded a free kick after Charlie Lee had committed a foul just outside the D. Armani Little curled the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner to give the home side an early 1-0 advantage.

Things got worse for Yeovil just 4 minutes later as a cross from the left hand from Ben Whitfield found Danny Wright who slotted the ball home from a tight angle for 2-0.

On 11 minutes Yeovil won their first corner which had to be punched away for another corner which came to nothing.

Torquay continued to impress as the game advanced and on 20 minutes a corner from the right hand side was headed back across goal and the ball deflected off Charlie Lee and into the back of the net for 3-0. Despite the goal being a bit fortunate Torquay were worthy of the 3-0 lead and Yeovil could have no complaints about the score line.

Two minutes later Yeovil had their first real opportunity of the game and it should have been 3-1 as along throw into the box found Max Hunt just 5 yards out of goal bu this shot was spurned over the bar when he had a virtually open goal in front of him.

On 27 minutes more danger for Yeovil as Torquay were awarded another free kick in a similar position to the free kick for their opening goal but thankfully the shot was over the bar.

On 34 minutes Torquay made their first substitution as Armani Little was forced off through injury and being replaced by Josh Umerah.

One minute later Yeovil made their first substitution as Matt Warburton was replaced by Courtney Duffus - giving Yeovil three strikers on the field.

The strikers job was about to be made much harder just two minutes later though as Torquay grabbed a fourth goal as they capitalised on a dreadful mistake by the Yeovil defence. Adam Smith and his defenders simply switched off and stopped playing as they were convinced that Torquay had ran the ball out of play on the goal line however the referee never blew his whistle. Torquay had crossed the ball back into the box and Aaron Nemane could tap the ball into the net unchallenged for 4-0.

That fourth goal was a bitter pill to swallow as the manner of which it was conceded was very poor but at the same time the 4-0 score line was nothing more than Torquay deserved.

On 39 minutes Torquay made their second substitute as Danny Wright was replaced by Jake Andrews.

4 minutes of time was added on at the end of the half and Yeovil went in at half time with the game already beyond their reach.

Half Time: Torquay United 4-0 Yeovil Town

The second half was always going to be a case of damage limitation now and Yeovil actually started the second half the brighter of the two sides. On 47 minutes a Courtney Duffus shot hit the outside of the post after some poor Torquay defending allowed Duffus to run through on goal.

Just one minute later some further poor defending allowed Yeovil to pull a goal back as Albi Skendi capitalised on a goal mouth scramble to bundle the ball home for a consolation goal.

Just 4 minutes later though the goal was un-done as Torquay made it 5-1. A low cross into the box from the left hand side from Ben Whitfield found Connor Lemonheigh-Evans who fired it beyond Adam Smith to restore the home sides 4 goal advantage.

On 54 minutes Yeovil's afternoon was made even more embarrassing as Chris Dagnall scuffed a shot wide of the target from just 4 yards after Shaun MacDonald spilled a shot in the box and Dagnall reacted quickest however he scuffed his shot wide of the target when it looked easier to score.

This was the last piece of play from Chris Dagnall as he was then substituted for Tom Knowles.

Yeovil continued to struggle throughout the remainder of the game and the gulf in class between the two sides was clear to see.

On 73 minutes Yeovil made their final substitution as Charlie Lee was replaced by Lawson D'Ath.

On 76 minutes Torquay also made their final sub as Dean Moxey was replaced by Fraser Kerr.

As the end of the game was slowly approaching Torquay were still showing no signs of letting up and on 82 minutes they got their sixth goal of the afternoon. A petty free kick conceded by Courtney Duffus was crossed into the box by Jake Andrews and Kyle Cameron was there to head home for 6-1.

3 minutes of time was added on at the end of the game and when the final whistle blew it was a relief that Yeovil's horrible afternoon was finally over.

Full Time: Torquay United 6-1 Yeovil Town

This game was always going to be hard game for Yeovil as going away from home to a team top of the league is never going to be a walk in the park but the manner in which we were defeated today was alarming to say the least. After finally getting the first win of the season in our last match 18 days ago we seem to have taken a huge step backwards in terms of confidence and the result today will further damage that.

Darren Sarll has some serious problems to sort out for the next game in 2 days time against Aldershot Town in a game that we simply have to get a positive result from.

The defeat leaves Yeovil next to bottom of the National League table however if Dover beat Dagenham & Redbridge in tonight's late kick off we will fall to the bottom of the table once again. At the moment there is a miniature league of 4 teams at the bottom of the table who are competing 20th place as Kings Lynn in 19th is 6 points ahead of us at this moment in time.
