Match Report: Chesterfield v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town fell to their first defeat in three matches today as they were comfortably beaten 3-0 by Chesterfield at the Technique Stadium. Second half goals from Akwasi Asante, Tom Whelan and Jake McCourt gave the home side a comfortable win as Yeovil struggled to assert themselves throughout the match.

Darren Sarll named the same starting XI as the one that beat Barnet 4-1 in mid-week and lined up with Alex Bradley, Max Hunt, Billy Sass-Davies and Michael Kelly in front of Adam Smith. Jimmy Smith, Tom Knowles, Josh Neufville and Albi Skendi made up the midfield while Rhys Murphy and Reuben Reid lead the attack.

On the bench was Carl Dickinson, Matt Worthington, Charlie Lee, Joe Quigley and Chris Dagnall.

Chesterfield kicked off towards the away stand.

Yeovil made the brighter start of the two teams as they put their opponents under a lot of pressure in the opening ten minutes.

They won their first corner 2 minutes in on the left hand side which was taken by Michael Kelly who's cross to the center of the box found Max Hunt but the header was wide.

Yeovil won another corner on 7 minutes on the left hand side again and. Michael Kelly delivered a good cross but it was headed away. Yeovil managed to win the ball back and won another corner this time on the right hand side.

Alex Bradley delivered the cross but once again it was headed away and it came to nothing.

After this good spell of early pressure Chesterfield began to settle into the game. Adam Smith was first called upon on 15 minutes as a long shot from Jake McCourt was heading goal wards but it was a comfortable save to make.

Chesterfield won their first corner on 18 minutes on the right hand side. Gavin Gunning delivered a deep cross which was headed back across the box but Yeovil were able to defend it well.

As the half progressed Chesterfield were now looking the better of the two sides and were applying sustained pressure on Yeovil but despite this they weren't looking particularly threatening.

On 23 minutes Adam Smith made a good save as former Yeovil Town player Tom Whelan weaved his way through the Yeovil defence and found Jake McCourt who's shot had to be tipped over the bar.

The resulting corner was headed away for another corner but this time it was caught by Adam Smith and Yeovil could clear their lines.

As half time approached Chesterfield were still the side in control of play and they came so close to taking the lead with 1 minute of the first half remaining. Curtis Weston unleashed a long range shot from midfield which should have been an easy save to make but Adam Smith spilled the ball and Akwasi Asante was quickest to the ball but credit to Adam Smith as he was able to block the shot for a corner which came to nothing.

Two minutes of time was added on and the game was all square at the break.

Chesterfield 0-0 Yeovil Town

The second half belonged to Chesterfield and just two minutes into the half they took the lead as Tom Whelan played a nice ball through to Akwasi Asante who ran onto the ball and rounded Adam Smith for an easy finish.

Yeovil did respond to this set back which was largely helped by Chesterfield giving away a lot of free kicks which allowed Yeovil to put them under some pressure but it didn't last long as Chesterfield were once again able to settle back down in to the game.

Yeovil made a double substitution on the hour mark as Jimmy Smith and Josh Neufville were replaced by Matt Worthington and Charlie Lee respectively.

Chesterfield almost doubled their advantage on 62 minutes as a good team moved got Chesterfield into a great position. Liam Mandeville produced a good pass to find George Carline who in turn found Akwasi Asante but he scuffed his shot wide of the target.

Six minutes later though they found their second goal as Tom Whelan picked up the ball outside the area, created a bit of space and produced a good shot that beat Adam Smith to double the home side's lead.

On 69 minutes Chesterfield made their first substitution as Alex Whittle was replaced by Joel Taylor.

With a 2-0 advantage Chesterfield were firmly in command of this game and Yeovil were struggling to get hold of the ball. Chesterfield were looking the far superior side and it was looking likely that Yeovil wouldn't be able to salvage anything from this game.

On 74 minutes Chesterfield made their second substitution as Akwasi Asante was replaced by Nathan Tyson.

With 13 minutes of normal time remaining Chesterfield made it 3-0 as Joel Taylor ran through on the left hand side and crossed the ball to Jake McCourt who fired the ball home into the roof of the net.

The game was now completely out of reach for Yeovil and the remainder of the game was fairly dull as the outcome was now beyond any doubt.

On 80 minutes both teams made their final substitutions as Reuben Reid was replaced by Joe Quigley for Yeovil while Liam Mandeville was replaced by Jack Clarke for Chesterfield.

Four minutes of time was added on but it mattered little and Yeovil had to return to Somerset empty handed.

Full Time: Chesterfield 3-0 Yeovil Town

It was a disappointing performance and result today but unfortunately you can't win them all. We've had a good run of form of late and maybe this will turn out to be a blip that will be forgotten about in a few weeks time.

The defeat sees us drop to 12th place, still only three points off a play off spot so we still have a lot to play for.

Our season continues on Tuesday night as Yeovil travel to South London to face Sutton United who are flying high in the table and at the time of writing are joint top of the league. Please note the early kick off time for Tuesday's game as the match is due to start at 7PM rather than the usual 7:45.
