Match Report - Wrexham v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town fell to a disappointing 3-0 defeat at The Racecourse this afternoon as Wrexham brushed Yeovil aside. First half goals from Shaun Pearson, Luke Young and Jordan Davies put the home side in a commanding position as Yeovil struggled to assert themselves into the game. Wrexham kept the pressure on Yeovil in the second half but they couldn't increase their lead further.

Darren Sarll made one change to the side that was beaten 3-1 by Halifax Town last Monday as Matt Worthington regained his place in the starting XI in favour over Jimmy Smith.

Yeovil lined up in a 3-5-2 formation with Albi Skendi, Billy Sass-Davies and Michael Kelly in front of Adam Smith. Carl Dickinson, Tom Knowles, Josh Nuefville, Matt Worthington and Chris Dagnall made up the midfield while Reuben Reid and Joe Quigley lead the attack.

Wrexham kicked off towards the Kop.

The first half belonged to Wrexham and their first decent chance came on 6 minutes as a good cross to the back post found Reece Hall-Johnson in space but his shot was high and wide.

Wrexham won the first corner on 8 minutes on the left hand side which was taken by Luke Young. His cross to the center of the box found Shaun Pearson who's header found the back of the net to give the home side an early lead.

Just two minutes later it could have been 2-0 as Carl Dickinson lost the ball to Jordan Davies on the goal line wo ran forward and put a cross in to Gold Omotayo in the center of the box but Billy Sass-Davies did enough to stop the shot.

Yeovil had to make their first substitution on 10 minutes as Matt Worthington had to be replaced by Max Hunt.

Yeovil won a free kick on 15 minutes just to the right of the goal about 25 yards out. Tom Knowles stepped up and produced a good shot but Rob Lainton was able to make the save and push the ball out for a corner which came to nothing.

Shortly after Wrexham won their second corner again on the left hand side. The corner was crossed to the center of the box by Luke Young but it had to be retaken but this time Yeovil were able to defend it clear.

On 20 minutes Wrexham increased their lead as Yeovil failed to deal with a forward pass and allowed Wrexham in and a low cross to the edge of the area found Luke Young who was able to fire the ball goal wards and the ball was deflected into the back of the net.

Wrexham continued to press and shortly after their second goal they were in again but despite having two players bearing down on goal they couldn't find the back of the net.

On 28 minutes Yeovil had to make their second substitution as Albi Skendi was forced off for picking up an injury and was replaced by Emmanuel Sonupe.

Just after the substitution Wrexham were awarded a free kick just to the left of the goal 25 yards out. Jordan Davies stepped up and curled the ball around the wall and into the back of the net to give Wrexham full command of the game.

With Wrexham being so dominant they continued to put Yeovil under pressure for the remainder of the half and Yeovil really struggled to stop their attacks.

On 39 minutes Wrexham made their first substitution as Jay Harris was replaced by Paul Rutherford.

6 minutes of time was added on at the end of the half and Wrexham went in at the break with a fully deserved 3-0 advantage.

Half Time: Wrexham 3-0 Yeovil Town

Yeovil made a decent start to the second half but Wrexham still posed a threat and they won a corner on 49 minutes on the left hand side. Luke Young delivered the cross to the near post but Yeovil were able to defend it clear.

Soon Wrexham were putting Yeovil under more pressure again and they almost made it 4 as a shot by Cameron Green rebounded off the post and away to safety.

As the hour mark approached Yeovil were still struggling as it was all Wrexham and they simply weren't willing to allow Yeovil any sort of chance to pull a goal back.

Wrexham won another corner on 61 minutes again on the left hand side. Luke Young crossed to the far post but Wrexham gave away a foul and Yeovil were awarded a free kick.

With 20 minutes to go Yeovil still weren't capable of matching their opponents and Wrexham almost made it 4-0 as a corner from Cameron Green was crossed to Shaun Pearson who's header had to be pushed over the bar by Adam Smith.

Yeovil managed to clear the following corner but they were still under pressure from Wrexham which summed up the game pretty well.

On 74 minutes Wrexham made their second substitution as Dior Angus was replaced by Jordan Ponticelli.

Shortly after Wrexham made their final substitution as Jordan Davies was replaced by Dan Jarvis.

On 80 minutes Yeovil made their final substitution as Tom Knowles was replaced by Toby Stephens.

Yeovil were given a rare opportunity on 84 minutes as they won a corner on the right hand side which was taken by Michael Kelly but his cross to the center of the box was easily defended.

3 minutes of time was added on and Yeovil walked away from The Racecourse with a deserved defeat.

Full Time: Wrexham 3-0 Yeovil Town

The performance today was very poor and the scoreline could have been much worse today. Wrexham were just the far superior side and while Yeovil do have the qualities to match them they just weren't able to produce it today.

The defeat sees us slip into 16th position and with only five games left Yeovil don't have long to try and finish in a more respectable league position.

Our season continues on Tuesday night as Yeovil travel to face Aldershot Town at The Recreation Ground. Kick off is at 7PM.
