Match Report: Yeovil Town v Stockport County

Yeovil Town fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Stockport County at Huish Park this afternoon as an unfortunate own goal mid-way into the first half was enough to give the away side the points.

Darren Sarll was forced into making one change from the side that lost 4-3 at Altrincham last weekend as Josh Neufville was out of action for breaking his ankle and was replaced by Alex Bradley.

Yeovil lined up in their usual 4-4-2 formation with Carl Dickinson, Billy Sass-Davies, Michael Kelly and Alex Bradley in front of Adam Smith. Lawson D'Ath, Charlie Lee, Tom Knowles and Chris Dagnall made up the midfield while Joe Quigley and Reuben Reid lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Toby Stephens, Emmanuel Sonupe, Adam Heaton and Jimmy Smith.

Stockport kicked off towards the home terrace.

The majority of this game was fairly dull with few chances throughout. Stockport were applying early pressure on Yeovil but they weren't able to create any chances from their play.

Yeovil almost took the lead on 11 minutes as an excellent pass from Lawson D'Ath allowed Joe Quigley to shoot on the half volley but Ben Hinchliffe was able to turn the shot past the post for a corner which was overhit and came to nothing.

The game continued without incident until the 24th minute when Yeovil fell 1-0 down as a shot from John Rooney was deflected into the back of the net by Michael Kelly.

On 32 minutes Yeovil won their second corner of the game but once again it came to nothing as the cross was caught by the keeper.

Just before half time Yeovil were forced into making their first substitution as Lawson D'Ath was forced off due to picking up an injury. Jimmy Smith came on to replace him and in doing so was making his final professional appearance of his career as he is retiring from playing after this season.

3 minutes of time was added on and the away side had a slim advantage going into the second half.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 0-1 Stockport County

Yeovil made the better start to the second half and almost levelled the scores immediately as a good cross into the box from Jimmy Smith found Joe Quigley but his header crashed off the underside of the bar and Ben Hinchliffe could collect the loose ball.

On 50 minutes Yeovil won another corner and Alex Bradley's cross to the center of the area caused the Stockport defence some problems but it was eventually cleared away.

On 56 minutes Stockport won their first corner which was taken short and Yeovil were able to defend the attempt clear.

Yeovil made their second substitution on 74 minutes as Chris Dagnall was replaced by Emmanuel Sonupe.

4 minutes later Stockport made their first substitution as Harry Cardwell was replaced by Richie Bennett.

In the final 10 minutes Yeovil were applying a lot of pressure to their opponents and were creating some good opportunities but they struggled to test Ben Hinchliffe in the Stockport goal.

On 88 minutes Stockport made their final substitution as Alex Reid was replaced by Sam Minihan.

4 minutes of time was added on at the end of the game and Yeovil's final fixture of the season ended in a narrow defeat.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 0-1 Stockport County

Another season has gone by and it's been a bit of an up and down one. Our poor start to the season has meant that we struggled to push up the table when we managed to get things right on the field in the new year. After the passing of Lee Collins it was always going to be difficult for the players to continue the season but we've had some good performances and good results which is a credit to the players.

We finish the season in 16th position with 52 points from 42 matches. I personally think that we have a better side than our league position suggests but once again our poor start has impacted our season quite badly.

A big summer is ahead for the club as we need to find replacements for some key players who are moving on. We are going to miss Rhys Murphy next season as his ability to find goals consistently is something we haven't seen from any of the other strikers this season. Carl Dickinson will be missed as his passion and commitment made him a fans favourite as did Charlie Lee who is also moving on after this season. Jimmy Smith is retiring from professional football and is returning to Chelsea where he will be taking up a coaching role.

Our defence will need some fresh blood next season as far too many times we had given away soft goals that cost us points - especially in the opening 10 or so games. Scoring goals wasn't too much of an issue but if we can't find a replacement for Rhys Murphy next term we may be in for another season of inconsistent results.
