Match Report: Dagenham & Redbridge v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town picked up a superb 1-0 win at Dagenham & Redbridge yesterday afternoon to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to six matches. An own goal from Paul McCallum on the stroke of half time was enough to give Yeovil the victory in a game where the home side were reduced to 10 men right at the end of the first half.

Darren Sarll named an unchanged team from the side that beat Eastleigh 2-1 at Huish Park last weekend.

Yeovil lined up in a 4-4-2 formation with Jordan Barnett, Max Hunt, Luke Wilkinson and Dan Moss in front of Grant Smith. Matt Worthington, Dale Gorman and Tom Knowles and Josh Staunton made up the midfield while Adi Yussuf and Charlie Wakefield lead the attack.

On the bench was Max Evans, Alex Bradley, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Joe Quigley and Morgan Williams.

Yeovil kicked off towards the away end.

Both sides made positive starts to the game and were creating chances early on.

Dagenham won the first corner on 3 minutes on the right hand side which was crossed to the center of the box but Yeovil were able to defend.

Three minutes later Yeovil had a strong penalty appeal waved away as Charlie Wakefield drove into the box and was seemingly fouled but the referee was unmoved.

Dagenham won another corner on 11 minutes but on this occasion the cross was overhit and went out of play.

The best chance of the half fell Yeovil's way on 17 minutes after a defensive mistake from Dagenham allowed Charlie Wakefield to run in clean on goal but his effort was shot straight at Elliot Justham.

On 21 minutes Dagenham won their third corner of the game on the left hand side which was crossed to the center of the box and headed at goal but Grant Smith was able to catch the effort.,

Shortly afterwards Yeovil gave away a silly corner as a defensive header back to the keeper was misjudged but Dagenham were unable to capitalise on the opportunity.

As the half wore on Yeovil were looking the better side and were putting the home side under some pressure but they just couldn't turn that pressure into a lot of good chances.

On 38 minutes Yeovil won a free kick on the right hand side near the touchline but Jordan Barnett's cross was overhit and went out of play.

Two minutes of time was added on and just when it looked like the teams would go in level at the break Yeovil took the lead as a long throw into the box from Tom Knowles struck Paul McCallum and the ball rebounded into the back of the net.

Even though there was barely one minute of time left in first half stoppage time the game took an even further twist as Dagenham were reduced to 10 men as Elliott Johnson was shown a straight red card for a harsh challenge on Tom Knowles.

Half Time: Dagenham & Redbridge 0-1 Yeovil Town

Dagenham made their first substitution at half time as Dean Rance was replaced by Myles Weston.

With a man advantage and a goal advantage this was a good opportunity for Yeovil to pick up an excellent win on the road. They had to make sure that they didn't lose their concentration and capitalise on the chance they had.

Dagenham won a corner on 48 minutes but once again Yeovil were able to defend.

Yeovil then won a couple of corners themselves on 51 minutes but on both occasions they weren't able to make the most of them.

Dagenham made their second and last substitution on 55 minutes as Mauro Vilhete was replaced by George Saunders.

On 58 minutes Yeovil won a free kick on the edge of the area slightly to the left of the goal. Before it was taken Yeovil made their first substitution as Adi Yussuf was replaced by Joe Quigley.

The free kick had to be tipped over the bar by Elliot Justham and Yeovil were able to win a succession of corners but on both occasions they came to nothing.

On 63 minutes Yeovil almost increased their lead as Charlie Wakefield found Tom Knowles who's shot at goal was pushed wide. The resulting corner was caught by the keeper.

Yeovil made their second substitution on 73 minutes as Tom Knowles was replaced by Sonny Blu Lo-Everton.

With the final 15 minutes approaching Yeovil were beginning to sit back and soak up the Dagenham pressure. Despite this Yeovil were still looking fairly comfortable in the game as they were able to defend excellently well and prevent Dagenham from carving out goal scoring opportunities.

On 78 minutes Dagenham won a free kick on the touchline on the edge of the area on the right hand side wich was crossed to the near post and Yeovil put it out for a corner.

The corner was crossed to the near post and headed goalwards but Jordan Barnett was able to head the ball off the goal line and out for another corner which came to nothing.

With five minutes left Dagenham were still pushing for the equaliser and won another corner after Luke Wilkinson deflected a shot wide but the corner once again came to nothing.

On 87 minutes Dagenham won another corner in the same location as the one 9 minutes earlier. This time it was crossed to the far post and defended out for a corner on the left hand side but the keeper was able to punch the cross clear.

4 minutes of time was added on at the end and, after Yeovil made their final substitution with Matt Worthington being replaced by Morgan Williams, Yeovil were able to see the game out for a fantastic victory on the road.

Full Time: Dagenham & Redbridge 0-1 Yeovil Town

It was a great game to watch yesterday especially as most Yeovil fans would have been happy to have come away from Victoria Road with a draw. Defensively we were solid yesterday especially in the final 15 minutes when Dagenham were putting the pressure on us. We can now go to Bromley on Tuesday night with a bit more confidence that we may be able to get a positive result there as well.
