Match Report: Yeovil Town v Southend United

Yeovil Town suffered another defeat in front of the BT cameras at Huish Park yesterday afternoon as Southend United ran out 2-0 winners. Jake Hyde put the home side in front after 23 minutes and substitute Rhys Murphy sealed the win on 91 minutes. The game was marred by a nasty injury to Alex Fisher, who had to be stretchered off after breaking his ankle. We all wish him a speedy recovery.

Mark Cooper made three changes to the side that lost at home to Bromley last weekend. Alex Fisher and Chiori Johnson dropped to the bench and Callum Harriott was dropped. Jordan Young, Jack Clarke and Scott Pollock came in to replace them.

Yeovil opted for what looked like a 5-2-3 formation with Ryan Law, Miguel Freckleton, Josh Staunton, Owen Bevan and Andrew Oluwabori in front of Grant Smith. Jack Clarke and Charlie Cooper were in the middle while Jordan Maguire-Drew, Jordan Young and Scott Pollock were up front.

On the bench was Jamie Reckord, Max Hunt, Alex Fisher, Malachi Linton and Chiori Johnson.

Yeovil started the game the brighter of the two sides and within the first 2 minutes put pressure on the Southend goal. Scott Pollock was able to get a shot at goal but he wasn't able to beat Collin Andenge Ndi.

Yeovil continued to push forward but as the game progressed Southend began to come into it and stop Yeovil's momentum.

On 23 minutes the first real chance for the away side resulted in a goal when Yeovil were unable to deal with the ball in the box and some lapse defending allowed Jake Hyde to slot the ball in.

Yeovil were now on the back foot and weren't able to put any pressure on the away side. The frailties in the squad was beginning to show and we just seemed scared to seize the initiative and go forward with intent.

The only other chance of note for Yeovil during the first half came right on half time when Scott Pollock headed the ball onto the post and Yeovil went in a goal down at half time.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 0-1 Southend United

Yeovil made a substitution at half time as Jack Clarke was replaced by Alex Fisher.

Unfortunately, Alex Fisher lasted only 5 minutes on the pitch before he was involved in an incident with Collin Andeng Ndi. Fisher chased after a loose ball and Andeng Ndi was able to gather the ball in his hands but Fisher collided with him and went down screaming in pain. Those who were closest to the incident could clearly see that he had broken his ankle and he had to be stretchered off the pitch and replaced by Max Hunt.

Yeovil needed to keep their heads after this incident and they almost levelled the game on 63 minutes when a Yeovil corner was put to the far post and Josh Staunton's header was well saved.

On 70 minutes Southend made a double substitution as Jon Benton and Jake Hyde were replaced by Wes Fonguck and Callum Powell.

Yeovil then made their last substitution three minutes later when Jordan Young was replaced by Malachi Linton.

Yeovil were now pushing for a leveler but once again they just weren't able to create anything. All their attacks just fizzled out into nothing and left the home fans frustrated.

With 7 minutes to go Yeovil were reduced to 10 men when Miguel Freckleton was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Callum Powell. Yeovil's task got even harder.

Southend made their final substitution on 90 minutes when Harry Cardwell was replaced by Rhys Murphy.

Due to the lengthy stoppage for Fishers injury, 11 minutes of time was added on and on 91 minutes Southend put the game beyond any doubt when Rhys Murphy - who had only been on the pitch for 2 minutes - put the ball beyond Grant Smith to seal the victory.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 0-2 Southend United

The next three games are now absolutely massive. Away at Gateshead, away at Aldershot and home to Dorking. A minimum of 7 points is needed and 3 of those simply have to come at Gateshead on Tuesday. The idea of Yeovil Town being in National League South is something that none of us want to face, but if we don't get the points we need in the next three games, that will be where we will be heading.
