Match Report: Aldershot Town v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town remain five points adrift of National League safety as a 1-1 draw with relegation rivals Aldershot Town meant Yeovil missed an opportunity to close the gap. Town fell behind on 50 minutes when a free header from Tylder Cordner found its way through but substitute Callum Harriott levelled the game 15 minutes later. The home side missed a dubious penalty at the end and the game finished all square.

Mark Cooper made five changes to the side that was beaten 4-0 at Gateshead on Tuesday. Jamie Reckord, Max Hunt, Andrew Oluwabori and Scott Pollock all dropped to the bench and Jordan Clarke was dropped altogether. In came Jordan Maguire-Drew, Malachi Linton, Ryan Law, Chiori Johnson and Miguel Freckleton.

Yeovil opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Ryan Law, Miguel Freckleton, Josh Staunton and Owen Bevan in front of Grant Smith. Matt Worthington, Charlie Cooper and Chiori Johnson made up the middle while Jordan Maguire-Drew, Jordan Young and Malachi Linton lead the attack.

On the bench was Jamie Reckord, Max Hunt, Andrew Oluwabori, Callum Harriott and Scott Pollock.

Yeovil kicked off attacking the terraced end.

The opening 20 minutes saw Yeovil playing OK, but failing to create anything. It was pretty much a case of two poor teams scrapping it out with Yeovil only being able to create half chances.

When we did get forward there was either nobody in the box to put a cross into or we'd just lump it in with out even looking and each time the attacks fell flat.

Neither side were able to threaten during the first half and the game was goal-less at half time.

Half Time: Aldershot Town 0-0 Yeovil Town

Just five minutes after the restart Aldershot took the lead when a corner from Ollie Harfield found Tyler Cordner un-marked and his header eventually found its way in after Yeovil tried to hastily clear it.

Yeovil made two substitutions on 58 minutes by replacing Ryan Law and Jordan Young with Callum Harriott and Scott Pollock.

It didn't take long for Harriott to have an impact as he drew the game level on 65 minutes. Some neat football involving Malachi Linton and Matt Worthington allowed the ball to be crossed into Harriott who turned it home from close range.

Aldershot immediately made a substitution by replacing Joe Partington with Justin Amaluzor.

Four minutes later they made their second substitution when Josh McQuoid was replaced by Michael Klass.

With the game hanging in the balance it was a nervy game, but again neither side was threatening to score again.

Aldershot made their final substitution on 75 minutes when Jack Barham was replaced by Jake Hutchinson.

Yeovil survived a scare on 83 minutes when a shot from outside the box from Justin Amaluzor clipped the top of the bar and went over.

Just one minute later though, Aldershot were awarded a penalty. They broke away from a Yeovil corner and Chiori Johnson slid in to take the ball off Tahvon Campbell. It looked like a fair challenge and that he won the ball, but the referee thought otherwise and pointed to the spot. Jake Hutchinson stepped up but happily for Yeovil, he blazed it over the bar.

Yeovil made their final substitution on 88 minutes when Matt Worthington was replaced by Andrew Oluwabori.

Nine minutes of time was added on and Yeovil weren't able to get the goal they needed and they remain in deep relegation trouble.

Full Time: Aldershot Town 1-1 Yeovil Town

There was more effort on the pitch today than there was up at Gateshead on Tuesday. The trouble is, a draw just wasn't enough. We remain 5 points adrift with 5 games remaining and barring a miracle, it is very likely that we will be a National League South club next season.
