Match Report: Wrexham v Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town's relegation from the National League was confirmed last night as Wrexham ran out 3-0 winners at The Racecourse ground. After a tight first half which saw Yeovil play some nice football, the home side took the lead on 60 minutes through Anthony Forde after a defensive error. From then on it was one-way traffic and Wrexham added a second 12 minutes later through James Jones before Paul Mullin capped off the win with 13 minutes remaining.

Mark Cooper made four changes to the side that drew at Solihull Moors on Saturday. Max Hunt, Malachi Linton and Jordan Young were all benched and Jordan Maguire-Drew was dropped. Scott Pollock, Andrew Oluwabori, Zanda Siziba and Reo Griffiths took their places.

Yeovil opted for a 5-3-2 formation with Jamie Reckord, Miguel Freckleton, Josh Staunton, Owen Bevan and Andrew Oluwabori in front of Will Buse. Matt Worthington, Scott Pollock and Charlie Cooper were in the middle while Zanda Siziba and Reo Griffiths were up front.

On the bench was Grant Smith, Max Hunt, Chiori Johnson, Malachi Linton and Jordan Young.

Yeovil kicked off towards the home end.

The first half saw Yeovil hold their own against the league leaders, and were making a game of it.

Wrexham weren't showing their true credentials in the first half, whether that was down to nerves, not getting out of second gear or Yeovil being better than they were expecting, it was clear that Wrexham were struggling to get going.

Wrexham had a decent opportunity to take the lead after 13 minutes when Andy Cannon's shot was just wide.

On 22 minutes Yeovil had to make their first substitution as Owen Bevan had to be replaced through injury. Malachi Linton replaced him.

The half continued with Yeovil continuing to play some neat football, but the only decent effort at goal was from Matt Worthington on 26 minutes when his shot was saved by Ben Foster.

Four minutes of time was added on and the game hung in the balance.

Half Time: Wrexham 0-0 Yeovil Town

Neither side made changes at half time, and as was to probably be expected, Wrexham began to get control of the play.

It took until 60 minutes for them to get the opening goal. A slip by Scott Pollock allowed Anthony Forde to regain possession on the edge of the area and worked some space for him to shoot. The ball took a deflection and beat Buse to put the home side ahead to an almighty roar from the home crowd. Haven't heard a roar like that since our Football League days (oh how I miss them)!.

Yeovil made their second substitution on 63 minutes when Reo Griffiths was replaced by Chiori Johnson.

With 20 minutes to go Yeovil replaced Zanda Siziba with Jordan Young as the home side ramped up the pressure.

On 72 minutes it was 2-0 when a ball into the box wasn't defended and James Jones was able to score a scrappy goal to double the advantage.

Five minutes later Paul Mullin grabbed Wexham's' third when a ball in from the right hand side was headed over Buse.

With the game now way out of reach, Yeovil just had to see the game out as best they could. Yeovil's best attempt at getting a consolation goal was on 88 minutes when Jordan Young tried to chip Ben Foster but he was able to palm the ball away to safety.

Four minutes of time was added on, and at full time there were jubilant scenes from the home crowd. A much different story for the superb away following.

Full Time: Wrexham 3-0 Yeovil Town

While it was pretty much inevitable that Yeovil's fate was sealed after the Dorking game, it is still tough to take yet another relegation. The state the club is in right now is atrocious, and a plan to sort the club out and get it moving in the right direction again must start now. As for Wrexham, it looks like they are finally going to do it. The contrast between the two clubs right now is staggering.
