Match Report: Yeovil Town v Tonbridge Angels

The run of four home games on the trot ended with a deserved victory for Yeovil Town as they overcame Tonbridge Angels 2-0 to claim their third win of the season. A goal from Jordan Young on 13 minutes gave Town a deserved lead. In the second half Rhys Murphy saw his penalty kick saved but it mattered little in the end as substitute Frank Nouble sealed the win in injury time.

Mark Cooper made three changes to the side that drew with Maidstone last weekend. Jamie Sendles-White and Frank Nouble dropped to the bench and Jordan Maguire-Drew was dropped as Jordan Young, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton and Rhys Murphy regained their starting XI places.

A 4-4-2 formation was chosen with Alex Whittle, Jake Wannell, Josh Staunton and Morgan Williams in front of Will Buse. Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Charlie Cooper, Matt Worthington and Jordan Young were in midfield with Rhys Murphy and Jake Hyde up front.

On the bench was Jamie Sendles-White, Josh Owers, Zac Bell, Frank Nouble and Olly Thomas.

Yeovil kicked off towards the home end.

Yeovil started the game well and were worthy of the lead when Jordan Young put Town ahead on 13 minutes. A ball over the top was worked well on the right side and the ball was fed into Jordan Young who did well to shoot at the near post which beat Jonathan Henley.

Yeovil's bright start continued and they could have had a penalty on 19 minutes when Morgan Williams was seemingly fouled in the box, the referee waved away the appeals.

The momentum was taken out of Yeovil after Morgan Williams received a harsh yellow card after a 50/50 challenge but Town were under no real threat from Tonbridge.

On 31 minutes the supporters around the ground took part in a minutes applause as a tribute to Yeovil Town supporter Craig Leader, who sadly passed away last week at the young age of 31 after a battle with bowel cancer.

7 minutes before half time Yeovil were unlucky not to have doubled the lead when a shot to the far post was almost flicked in at close range by Jake Hyde but the goalkeeper was there to make the save.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 1-0 Tonbridge Angels

Neither side made changes at half time and Yeovil continued to create chances early in the second half but they weren't as dangerous going forward as they were in the first half.

On 63 minutes Yeovil were awarded a penalty when Rhys Murphy was fouled in the box. He stepped up to take it but saw his effort to the bottom right corner saved and Tonbridge cleared the danger.

Yeovil then made a double substitution as Jake Hyde and Rhys Murphy were replaced by Frank Nouble and Olly Thomas.

A few minutes later Sonny Blu Lo-Everton was replaced by Zac Bell.

The final 20 minutes were a relatively tame affair. Tonbridge were trying their best to break through the Yeovil defence but Yeovil were able to deal with the pressure. A second goal would have been most welcome to settle the nerves of the fans in the ground but they had to wait until the fifth minute of injury time when Frank Nouble fired in the second to seal the win.

Full Time: Yeovil Town 2-0 Tonbridge Angels

It was a much better performance today than what we have seen in recent weeks. There is still work to do but Town looked in much more control of the game and were never under any real threat throughout the 90 minutes. On reflection it is now three wins and a draw from the run of four home games and I think most fans would have been happy with that at the start of the run.

Our next fixture is on Monday when we travel to Havant & Waterlooville. Kick off is at 3:00PM.
