Match Report: Yeovil Town v Southend United

The first round proper of the FA Cup awaits Yeovil Town as they overcame National League side Southend United at Huish Park. Town went ahead after just 2 minutes through Jake Wannell and Jordan Young added the second with just over 20 minutes left to play and Town progressed into the proper rounds.

Mark Cooper named an unchanged starting XI to the team that beat Aveley last weekend. They opted for a 4-4-2 formation with Alex Whittle, Jake Wannell, Morgan Williams and Michael Smith in front of Joe Day. Will Dawes, Matt Worthington, Josh Owers and Jordan Young were in midfield while Frank Nouble and Rhys Murphy lead the attack.

On the bench was Will Buse, Jordan Stevens, Jake Hyde, Jordan Maguire-Drew, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Zac Bell and Josh Staunton.

Southend kicked off towards the home end.

It only took 2 minutes for the deadlock to be broken as Jordan Young's free kick was met by Jake Wannell who was able to fire in off the far post.

Town were playing very well in the opening stages of the game and could have added a second on 10 minutes when a neat ball to Will Dawes allowed him to run at goal but he blazed the effort over.

Southend were playing some neat football too but they didn't really trouble the Yeovil defence. Most of their chances were either well wide of goal or the defenders were able to deal with the threat.

Southend made their first substitution on 41 minutes as Dan Mooney was replaced by Beau MacDonald.

Half Time: Yeovil Town 1-0 Southend United

The opening stages of the second half were dominated by Southend. They were showing their strengths but once again they weren't really able to trouble Yeovil too much.

Once Town settled into the half they were able to get forward but they didn't create much either.

On 66 minutes Yeovil had a penalty appeal waved away when Rhys Murphy went down in the box but nothing was given.

Two minutes later Yeovil increased the lead as Jordan Young was put through on goal after a counter attack. He took on two defenders in front of him and it looked like he had done too much and lost the chance but right at the last second he poked the ball beyond Nick Hayes to put Town in control.

Yeovil then made two substitutions as Will Dawes and Rhys Murphy were replaced by Jordan Stevens and Zac Bell.

With a two goal cushion Yeovil were looking comfortable and any attack that Southend had came to nothing.

Yeovil made their last substitution on 83 minutes as Frank Nouble was replaced by Josh Staunton.

3 minutes of time was added on and Town progressed into the first round proper of the FA Cup.
